If it isn't true, it is still an interesting explanation!

Re: Did you know ?
Not sure about this one, but it seems possible...
If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds recieved in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
Maybe someone could varify it ?

two more parlimentary facts...
1) the Queen has to knock to enter the House of Commons and cannot enter if she is not given permission.
2) the expression 'do you want to take this outside' also comes from parliament; a politician cannot be held to be slanderous for any comments made in the house of commons, so they would say nasty and possibly untrue things about it other knowing they could get away with it. If the person being insulted wasn't happy he would ask the other person if he wanted to take it outside, ie if you say it outside this room i will sue your ass
Many people think it comes from pub brawls, but years ago it was more common for the fights to be in the pubs rather than outside and people had on quarms about doing this!

Re: Did you know ?
In 1696, a window tax designed to hit the rich was introduced. Many responded by blocking up windows. The tax was doubled in 1784, and abolished in 1851.

Nice one (s)
and another:
Petitions to parliament have to be placed in a Bag behind the speakers chair, hence a successful posting is referred to as being "in the bag"!!

Re: Did you know ?
Letting the cat out of the bag comes from a pig-in-a-poke
Pigs used to be sold in sacks, but dishonest business men would catch a cat, put it in a bag and sell it as a pig.
When the buyer opened the bag, letting the cat out, the secret was revealed

Re: Did you know ?
most substances shrink when they freeze & become more dense, as they cool.
- water becomes more dense as it cools until it reaches about 4°C, when it starts to become less dense - if this didn't happen, ice wouldn't float - and the water expands as it freezes, too.

I believe this is because gasses become less soluable as the water becomes more solid (colder), hence why you can get bubbles in ice cubes
