How many offsides were there in the end, at half time there wasn't any....
I switched off after half time.
It seems strange to wonder how many offsides there were rather than goals, but that is how bad the match was, until half time anyway

I believe it remained zero offsides.

And Switzerland didn't even want to score in the penalty shootout (nor did Shevchenko)

Mind you, it will be embarrassing for England if they lose against a Portugal side that's not at full strength.

I just hope that England go out there and put 3 or more goals past them and rid themselves of the habit of scoring one goal and hanging on stonewalling for the rest of the match.

It will be interesting to see what actual lessons England have learned and whether we have a solid defence to keep the Portuguese out. If I see any side-passing, back-passing or dribbling out of defence when a good boot to the wings would do the job I shall scream!! It's painful watching them do that as you're always expecting one of the opposing side to intercept a ball in the England half and put it in our net as happened with Sweden.

England also need to realise that though possession is nine tenths of the law the other tenth says you have to do something with the ball when you have it i.e. score. They also need to realise that in defence if they don't kick it out the opposition will kick it in and then we're in real trouble.

Listening to Radio One in the car last night. Live commentary (stroke by stroke) on the tennis. It's not quite the same as footie is it?

Re: World Cup 2006 Thread

Whether it's on the radio or on the telly... tennis is sleep-inducing.

I'd rather watch synchronised swimming than sit through a tennis match - it's less torturous.

Diplomatic Relations
As spotted in The Sydney Morning Herald's letters section:

'Just wanted to drop you all a note of condolence on your World Cup
exit. Although you were never really good enough to be there in the
first place, as one of our foreign outposts we think you did quite well
and, most importantly, represented your Queen admirably. So, well done,
little colony.

'On the upside though, now at least your long-haired, scruffy, unclean
teenage masses can all return to London to resume their minimum wage
jobs, serving us thirsty English boys warm beer, just in time for the
games on Friday and Saturday. Good timing, really, because as everyone
agrees, the real tournament starts now that only the real footballing
teams are left.

'Well, chin up, anyway, pickpockets, and I suppose it's back to stealing
your mothers' ironing boards and heading to the sea to try to dodge
those hungry sharks. How sweet. Best regards and God save the Queen.

'Paul Kaynes West Sussex (England)'

Re: World Cup 2006 Thread

great bet for the world cup - if it goes intoa penalty shootout, gerrard is 7/1 to score while beckham(who consistently misses penalties), lampard(who is on a cold streak) and joe cole(who doesn't even take penalties) are all at 1/3

townsend - "we're all waiting for (leo) messi"

1. it's "LEO MESSI"
2. he can't come on while you are all butt****ing him
3. he's a great dribbler, that's all. his passing is ok, his shooting is terrible and he has no defensive skills. i know out of him and carlitos which one i would pick
4. i wish sportsworld had this argentina kit and not the white one i have on now

Re: World Cup 2006 Thread

I liked the Germany Argentina game I thought it was a victory for determination, strength of character, and courage over ill discipline and poor sportsmanship.
At the end of the day the coach bottled it, why did he bring on those defensive midfielders, sometimes I think coaches just try to prove how clever they are, have they never heard of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Also what happened at the end we all saw the free-for-all however did anyone see the infamous karate kick?

No idea what happened, Heinze looked like he wanted to batter Bierhoff!

Cufre kicked Metzelder in the nuts! No footage of it as according to the BBC FIFA have confiscated all the tapes.
