The max you could use in a month would be 155gb if you were downloading at full speed 24 hours a day not less one second, not an earth shattering amount and considering that was only the point on the 3mb service they sent letters out I don't know what you are going on about.

Yeah 155 is spot on.
So you get put onto the 512kbs service if
1) you where on the 300kbs service and didnt want the 1mb/3gb service
2) you where on the 2/3/10mb service and went over 150gb a month for consective months...

Sounds like NTL have got it prity well worked out.

(FYI jtwn my point was about the flipent use of the word unlimited, thats what i "was going on about" even tho the limit of the speed is 155gb they still need to use that * just so they have recorse against you.)

I still don't know if my opt-out will be applied or not, as others say, maybe just abuse the 1Mbit as much as I need to, and if they aren't prepared to put me on the 512k, then it's gonna be time to get ADSL over the BT line ... and reassess if the family pack is really worth having, over the assortment on freeview.

Mind you, if the 512k is going to be an orderable package at the specified price, no problem - I was getting to the point of being most unimpressed by the 300k speed, or a 3Gb limit at the £17.99 price, compared to various ADSL offerrings.

As for unlimited, I'd say anyone over 50% of theoretical max needs to get a life, or a business tariff.

I opted out and I was downgraded from 1 Meg to 512k last week. An interesting bit on the usage policy page says:

"What happens if I reach my monthly usage allowance?
Over the next 12 months, ntl will provide tools to allow customers to measure their data usage...... Until these tools are available, ntl will monitor usage but not apply the monthly usage allowances, except in cases where heavy use is affecting network performance.

8 August 2005 "

Does this mean I can go back to 1 Meg and as long as I stay under, say 30 gig a month, I should be OK until the usage tools are introduced? And even if they're not happy with my usage, they can always downgrade me again.

i have just cheaked and even though i opted out of 1mg upgrade also, i have been move upto i some time this week. Hoping that it's not the capped one as i listen to a lot of internet radio, and that used up plenty. But the speeds nice i will enjoy it for now.

But then there's alot of people on the 1 Meg going over the 3 gig every month and nothing has happened to them yet.

If their not happy with you breaking the monthly allowance all the time, don't they just knock you back to 512k from 1 Meg?

No I was on 300kb and then was moved on to 1MB temporarily and then expecting to be moved back to 300kb as I had opted out. However, earlier in this thread someone said that those who opted out of the 1MB upgrade would get 512kb at the same price as 300kb and the same cap as the 300kb service.

Now this new e-mail has got me confused. What is it saying?

1). Will I be left on 1MB and given unlimited downloads.
OR
2). Will I be downgraded to 512kb but with unlimited downloads?
OR
3). Is there a third possibility?

Now I'm glad it looks like they failed to process my attempt at opt-out - from the caps (4) thread, it appears that those who voluntarily chose to remain on 300k (switched to 512k unlimited) should be able to go back (hopefully moved back automatically, if NTL want to avoid a customer relations fiasco) to the full strength 1Mbit.

Maybe those dumped to 512k for gluttony will have to stay there.

I'll say one thing, I'll avoid over hammering my I mbit until it IS officially unlimited, there's a Live DVD Linux I want to try out. (Knoppix DVD edition).
