Re: Only one cable modem?
Cant Ntl just discontinue your TV service and leave you with the STB. They've done this before, I believe Florence had this for a time before they swapped it out for a CM when the STB failed.
May be worth mentioning to them

They have said they can do this, but it means the OP now has a sky box and ntl box under the telly and has already said there is no room for said solution.

Cable length? Maybe his connecting cable isn't long enough to move the box away from it's current location.

Re: Only one cable modem?
You can have 2 internet connections via SACM at the same address albeit in different account names, full stop, end of story.
Nowadays if you want just BB and had it through a STB previously it is changed to a Cable Modem and the STB collected.
So, your options are either share your brothers or fork out for your own

Re: Only one cable modem?
ok i gues youve already gone off the why you "cant" have 2 cable modems but can havea cm and a stb im sure its soemthign to do with the frequencies they use the stb has a higher andwidth requirement but its not working on the same frequency as the cm's so it doesent matter

No it's because they don't want to, not because they cannot. It may also be due to the billing system being unable to cope with the concept, people may want more than one STB, but why more than once SACM when the SACM can be shared, but the STB cannot.
Furthermore, the cable to your house is on the same star of cable as the cable to your neighbours house and the one next to that etc, so in reality your SACM is on the same frequency as your neighbours etc.

Nope theres much more available on an NTL line than 3MBit, its just they wont do it just yet as there isnt enough capacity for everyone to have >3MBit yet, the only thing really limiting the speed to a cable modem is the Configuration File on it.

Re: Only one cable modem?
It is perfectly possible to run more than one SACM from the line. The digiboxes all have a DOCSIS modem built into them, so if you can run 3 digiboxes and one SACM on one line then you can run two SACM's. Indeed it may even work better than with the STB as the STB also uses DVB frequencies.
My personal guess is that the NTL billing system can't cope with more than one SACM

Re: Only one cable modem?
You can definitely run more than 2 modems I had a ntl 200 as a test modem and ran it quite happily with my 100 :-).
Although It was mentioned before a few times you really are going to benefit from having one larger 3mb connection, It will be cheaper and also in coming months (maybe next year) you will be among the first on ntl's network to be upgraded to 10mb

Re: Only one cable modem?
I'm sorry, this is totally but I've got to do this...
Why is it that every time I read this thread title I hear people singing:
"One cable modem,
"There's only one cable modem...!"
