I am surprised more scrutiny is not being directed as Ashcroft. He was snubbed for a job in Government that he felt he deserved and now goes off on a revenge mission.

Cameron is not the first of our politicians to have done things at Uni that they later regret and he won't be the last.

Isabel Oakeshott, a political journalist, today tried to laugh off the anecdote and to distance herself from the tidal wave of ribaldry on social media after extracts of her new unauthorised biography of the prime minister Call Me Dave were serialised in the Daily Mail.

Ms Oakeshott swatted away accusations that she failed to find a second source to corroborate the story that the future prime minister inserted a private part of his anatomy into the mouth of a dead pig.

“Well, hang on a minute, this is not Watergate, is it? It’s a small story about student hijinks,” she said on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

“The anecdote is presented as just an anecdote in the book. We do not say this is fact. We say this is an account that we were given by a senior MP and initially we thought it was a joke but that senior MP continued to make that allegation over a period of time.

“Now we couldn’t get to the bottom of it and honestly it’s not Watergate, and we didn’t think there was any point in putting vast teams of resources and researchers into that story so what we did is report it as an anecdote, and we said, this is what we were told, we don’t know, you can make up your own mind....

....Downing Street, which officially refused to comment, briefed off the record that the story was nonsense and that Mr Cameron was never a member of the Piers Gaveston dining society, where the incident was alleged to have taken place.

Sensational claims that David Cameron engaged in obscene activities with a pig’s head while a student at Oxford were unravelling last night after the authors of a new biography admitted they had failed to corroborate the story.

The prime minister was subjected to humiliation and ridicule yesterday over claims that he performed an indecent act with a pig during a bizarre initiation ritual. One of the authors said, however, that they “couldn’t get to the bottom” of the charge, but printed it anyway.

The biography, Call Me Dave, by Lord Ashcroft, the former Conservative peer and prominent opponent of Mr Cameron, and Isabel Oakeshott, a journalist, also contains a series of allegations about the prime minister’s past relationship with drugs.

The most extraordinary claim is that Mr Cameron took part in an initiation ritual for the Piers Gaveston club, named after the supposed lover of Edward II. Friends of the prime minister vigorously contest the account, pointing out that he was not even a member of the exotic Oxford club where the ceremony is supposed to have taken place.

Oakeshott told Channel 4 News: “We couldn’t get to the bottom of that source’s allegation, so we merely reported the account that the source gave us.” She added that the story about the pig was only a few paragraphs in a full-length book and the authors “don’t say whether we think it’s true”.

The biography reveals that they tried and failed to obtain alleged photographic evidence that the incident had taken place.
