I just use open dns, works well enough to keep my 8 year old and her friends from stumbling across sites they should not see!!! Although it does block things like The Sun website!!!! Open DNS is set on the router but my main pc that I use for work etc is set to another DNS service and has full access, seems to work alright.
As long as it is an opt in i think it is a good idea, there are a lot of very less then savvy PC users who are frightend to let their kids use the internet because they dont understand it, and they dont understand how to control it!!!
