Just an update, VM technician came this morning who knew all about the problem before he arrived. There is a lot of people in the area with the same problem, 50Mb users worst affected apparently. It's caused by some work that took place last Friday (something to do with load balancing) and is affecting anyone who connects through a particular hub in Marske. You can check this by doing a tracert, the first external hop will be "cpc1-mars3.[full link removed].cable.virginmedia.com" - This is the affected hub.
The issue has been escalated up to the senior network technicians who are looking at the problem now. If you wish to get an update on it give VM a call and quote Remedy number 1329660.
So for now, continue to use the proxy and hopefully it will be resolved shortly.
