I know it sounds like a cliche but things like this dont usually hapen to people like me.
It is in the public sector, local goverment, do you think that will make a difference?

Its no secret the public sector is less well paid, as budgets are tight. So if you managed to wow them and they are hoping to fit you into a job, good for you Holidays and pensions are usually better in the public sector, whereas other benefits are not so good. I suppose you take your chance whichever way you go, but you've got time to weigh it all up when you meet. No matter what they offer, go away and think about it before agreeing

Also be warned, depending on what your skill set is, private sector workers who go over to the public sector, often find it difficult to break back into the private sector - and will sometimes not be taken seriously by the private sector

I dont know about tight budgets. A while ago I had a contract in the Gambling Commission based in Holborn. They were moving to new offices in Birmingham within 3 months of when I started my contract. The new offices would also have brand new IT kit (PCs etc)
This did not stop them spending aprroximately 1.5k on 40 new PCs to be used just for the 3 month period in London. Additionally the system I was contracted to sort out had cost them 60K for something that looked like it had been written in 2 weeks!
In my experience they might have tight budgets, but boy can they overspend wastefully.

They have tight budgets on (permanent) staff salaries.
For equipment, and contractors there seems to be no limit on what they can spend.
When all the civil servants got the boot a while a go, a friend of mine was a PM on a government project - once they got rid of the permanent staff to save money, they then had to employ contractors at 5 to 6 times the salary of the permanent staff to cover the work.
I think contractor salaries don't go down on the spreadsheet as employment costs, so it's easier to spend on them
I was annoyed because they couldn't get me in there

Contractors and equipment are usually on Project work, which comes out of Capital budgets, rather than Operational (including salaries) budgets.
btw, I've just moved from "industry" to "government" (Higher Education) - best move I ever made (imho).
