Same here. Its not a loud noise (its a quiet, fridge-like humming, as Redjay1 put it) but, its there even when its on Standby.
I hope its not the Hard Drive cos it won't last long being on 24/7

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
I guess this must be 'normal' then since quite a few of us have it.
Not sure I can put up with it, its really quite annoying when the room is otherwisew silent

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
I've got used to the humming, but God knows what its doing to my electricity bill. Its basically a Media PC which sounds like its always on.
Still, its a wonderful piece of kit to have.

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
It is a great piece of kit and it works brilliantly
But I cant help thinking my box is faulty, the hard drive surely cant be intended to make that much continuous noise? I just wish it would go away at least when it is on standby- but it really is like having a fridge or hard drive with fan in the room.

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
Don't get me wrong - I am not saying the box is noisy as the sound coming from mine is perfectly acceptable for a hard drive based device. I just expected that the hard drive would shutdown when the unit is on standby or during the rest period (as stated in the manual) - does the hard drive not get a rest then ???? running 24/7 is not going to help from a environmental point of view or lifespan of the hard drive.
My other DVR (pioneer) hard drive spins down immediately the unit is put on standby.
In post #12 of this thread it is stated that the unit is silent on standby - can anyone else confirm whether this should be the case.

There is a constant whirring noise which does sound like a fan (its actually not disimilar to the noise a fridge makes!?). If it is the harddrive, it hasnt powered down once since it was installed yesterday. Even if I leave the box in standby overnight, the whirring continues.
Its getting quite irritating, its as loud as the fan on my PC which is very distracting when the tv is turned off.
Is this normal????

Have you tried holding the sides of the box, mine made a noise like the fans in a PC and i could hear it over the tv but i pressed the sides of the box and it stopped it, the case was vibrating. Its done it a couple of times since, but a simple press on the case and it stops. Mines virtually silent normally, I can just about hear the harddrive when I get close upto it.

Amen. I can't believe the wastage. You'd think new technology would spare a thought for global warming. What's the excuse?
Aside from scheduled recordings, why should the drive spin when in standby? Surely no-one expects to be able to "rewind live TV" to before they switched the unit on!

"They say" a HDD suffers less wear from being constantly spun up than it does from being constantly spun up from rest.
I can say that this is definately true for electric motors in general but concede that it is not very Green at all.

Exactly the same for me as well but i spoke to engineer incase this would be a problem and he said it does not matter if you switch the power off because its only a basic hard drive, but obviously if your recording you can't

I don't think the electricity consumption of a hard disk is very high, 3-4 watts maybe

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
I love noise. It means something is working, alive even.
My girlfriend is noisy. I think some people would call
it barking. But I love it. And even my distinctly beautiful
Bravia whirrs a little. But it's a comfortable pitch. It blends
in with every tick, whirr and snap, that is the orchestral electronica
of my favourite gadgets. Wait until everything is silent, that's when
the panic sets in and the sense of impending gadgety doom sets in

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
Mine was noisy when i first had it installed, i think it was vibrating inside my tv cabinet and making it sound worse than what it actually was, so i got one of those sponge things you use for washing up(with the abrasive stuff on one side) cut it into four pieces and put one piece under each "foot" of the V+ box. Quiet as a mouse now. Got that tip from someone on here, can`t remember who but thanks anyway

Re: Is it supposed to be as noisy?
had a `new` v+ box silver for two days, to cure the not to noisy hum from hard drive. cut a piece of rubber to `just `lift the right hand two base feet off the tv/cabinet shelf, place the rubber half way between the feet and about half inch in from the v + box side.rubber I used was ex conveyor belt, assume an eraser rubber or two would do the same from w h smith or..... took 90% of the hum away.hope this helps.
