Re: XP Pro and XP Home
If I buy an upgrade disk will I be able to install it over the top of my existing XP Home install?
My Laptop was originally installed my the Manufacturers, all I have is a system restore disk - no XP key.....

Re: XP Pro and XP Home
Pro will go over the top of Home and it will come with it's own key so it will only look to make sure you have a valid windows install on the hard drive to upgrade from. Can you not find out your serial key through Everest?

Re: XP Pro and XP Home
TBH Paul, I've never really needed it.
The last time I did a restore from the Manufacturers disk it just went all the way through and never asked for a key. I presume that it just copies an image onto the HDD after reformatting it.

And, yes, Everest does show my CD key.
Is there any way I can change a CD key after I've completed the install?
Say, for the sake of argument, that I did an install but used the wrong key (but somehow it went thorugh and just won't let me activate/update) would I be able to correct that or would I have to install again using the correct key?
(I know that sounds, well, dodgy - but it's not)

Well as long as you don't delete the partition the info is in then you can always go back to Home if it goes wrong.
There are instructions on Microsofts site to change Serial Keys after install, it was to help people put legal keys onto their illegal copies
Ere ya go
