We could visit the entire solar system - there are technical obstacles which could be overcome, but with a *lot* of money. So much money, it wouldn't be fair to complain about lack of political will.

We could visit the rest of the galaxy if half the guff spouted on good old Star Trek had any more than a grain of science behind it. I don't expect someone to invent a warp drive any time soon no matter how much money they might spend trying. Interstellar jaunts are going to remain a dream for a very long time yet.

Re: Huygens Descent On Titan

the theory behind the warp drive engine is one used by many scientists who are playing with designs and chemical and other gynetics and long worded stuff who think it is possible, but no one will leave about 566 billion quid onto it.

Then you've got to invent an Inertial Dampng Field to stop the people being squished.

I think all this type of technology will eventually come to pass, but not any time soon.

Re: Huygens Descent On Titan

The extreme magentic force of the engines, and the tear form in the space continum, would be able to provide a polorisation of the inner hull shell to create the dampening field.

As the fusion engines would be the power source of the entire craft, it would be ample, a team would be required to make sure the reaction process is stable at all times and sufficent cooling, but I think with modern metals we have the technology to have a shot perhaps at this.

Just who is brave enough?

(okay I am talking stuff i shouldnt )

Greenbank 110 m telescope confirms signal from Huygens probe.
Signal indicates that the probe has survived the entry phase and that the instrument payload is active.

Re: Huygens Descent On Titan

Amazing acheivment we should be proud we have people with the skills to pull such a stunt off.

To think though that in 50years we could pop to Titan, and have lunch while in orbit, and come home to go pub.

Edit - Oh and Russ, how can you not be impressed/inspired?
Because I'd rather we concentrate on our own planet.

Re: Huygens Descent On Titan

To know our own planet we need to explore others, we have not seen this planet grow up.

We need to see others learn more explore, find new facts about our planets youth, before we can say for certain what to and what not to do with Earth.

Why? I think we know enough of what not to do here.

Do we?

Daily now we make new discoveries about our planet, today in news about dimming of the sun due to global warming, which has just been discovered, this could mean reduced sun light, and interupting the natural cycle of rain fall, hence drought and famine. For us to find this out about our Earth, we have had to go into space and develop and learn and see what moves out planet, we have learnt alot about our outer atmosphere, cloud density, storm behaviour and a bunch of other stuff, due to having space station, and people who go up there to do a good job for us down here, we wont find all the answers in space, but I am sure we will find enough to answer a few questions.

It is space which could bring us more life on earth, thanks to the discovery of certain forms of rays and radiation from the sun hitting Earth, again affecting weather and other forms of sea life, and the food/water chain, we have learnt possible one thing to do would be to construct large mirrors around Earth to bounce back certain forms of deadly rays.

Long sounding, far fetched but one way or the other we will go out there and explore.

Perhaps exploring will make us appreicate Earth all the more.

If the current climate is due to global warming, it can be deal with through other methods instead of travelling to other planets and moons.

What most scientists do, to find the truth, why we are here, are we alone (and I could go on).
