Re: DNS problems today ?

No area fault?

Just tried all the poplar proxies
62.255.64.4 - 62.255.64.10

All except 62.255.64.6 seem to be ok - 62.255.64.6 is dead slow - just like the default transparent proxy setting.

Re: DNS problems today ?

Pop4 seems ok, pop7 is all but dead, unfortunately it seems to be the one I'm lumbered with by default - it really annoys me having to keep altering settings to browse the web - I wish NTL would do away with these proxies

Thanks everyone.

Re: DNS problems today ?

I think I may have found the problem:

Traces show a new entry that I haven't seen before that is losing upto 100% of packets:

Tracing route to news.easynews.com [140.99.99.130]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 6 ms 6 ms 10 ms 10.82.176.1
2 6 ms 5 ms 18 ms wapk-t2cam1-b-ge-wan41-112.inet.ntl.com [80.1.17
0.185]
3 * 7 ms * popl-t2core-b-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com [62.255.81.1
41]
4 9 ms 7 ms 7 ms popl-t2core-a-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com [62.255.81.1
3]
5 7 ms 8 ms 7 ms pop-bb-a-so-320-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.65]
6 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms so-7-0.hsa2.London1.Level3.net [212.113.14.129]
7 9 ms 7 ms 7 ms so-4-0-0.mp1.London1.Level3.net [212.187.131.121
]
8 9 ms 8 ms 9 ms so-3-0-0.mp1.London2.Level3.net [212.187.128.46]
9 80 ms 80 ms 82 ms as-0-0.bbr2.Washington1.Level3.net [4.68.128.102
]
10 136 ms 137 ms 136 ms so-0-0-0.mp1.Phoenix1.Level3.net [64.159.3.213]
11 137 ms 136 ms 136 ms so-10-0.hsa1.Phoenix1.Level3.net [4.68.113.242]
12 145 ms 147 ms 146 ms news.easynews.com [140.99.99.130]
Trace complete.

The new entry is number 3 (popl-t2core-b-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com ) above, its also showing in some other traces, packet loss is running at 50 to 100% - who should I report this to ?

cheers

Looks pretty sound to me mate.

Sending 1000, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 195.22.128.20, timeout is 2 seconds:
Success rate is 100 percent (1000/1000), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/2/20 ms

Routers route, not necessarily answer pings, so long as there's no packet loss behind it enjoy your new sub-10ms pings to jolt

Re: DNS problems today ?

Yeah the pings are great, its the time outs that are really annoying !

Ah well, fingers crossed hopefully it will right itself (Pop7 is still just timing out on almost everything)

Re: DNS problems today ?

Just got back home after being out most of the day & browsing is just as bad as it was at 9 o'clock this morning.

I have to keep clicking on refresh before I can get a page to load.

I'm in RM8 using Poplar proxies.

[2nd attempt at trying to post]

Re: DNS problems today ?

Its even worse this morning, almost everything times out

Neotrace is giving 100% packet loss on the same hop as I mentioned earlier and also the one after it, this only started happening yesterday.
Most domains are giving 'the domain name entered could not be resolved'

Looks like RM postcode area is screwed...

POP7 is fine - I have been using it since you posted last night without any problems. The router is also fine, it's just a bit ignorant where icmp is concerned.

Sounds to me more like you have a local network issue as few others seem affected. Have you actually reported it to TS yet ?

Re: DNS problems today ?

If I manually specify POP7 its fine too, its only when I don't specify a proxy at all that it is useless, but DNS lookups are slow for ftp & OE as well so it looks like a more general problem.

*sigh* Guess I'm going to have to get in the queue for TS after all..

I've raised it as a fault using the online form indicated to me by monkeybreath in a PM

cheers

Re: DNS problems today ?

I have just found this forum while searching for a solution to this problem.

Comforted (sort of) by so many in the same boat.

NTL denied any problem their end.

I have tried changing settings to overcome this problem, which now appears not to be mine.

Could you suggest what setting I should be using for the LAN & IE?

i.e. DNS setting (or automatic select)

Proxy settings?

I am in Havering RM11.

Thanks,

Re: DNS problems today ?

to the site

you should have it set to obtain DNS servers automatically, and not use a proxy unless you are having problems without.

Re: DNS problems today ?

I am in IG8, exact same problem. Last few days the service has been terrible. I phoned TS but after 15 minutes on hold my patience timed out too. Surely NTL must be able to do their own regular checks on their service rather than wait for customer complaints to alert them to the problem.

Re: DNS problems today ?

Tried to get Tech support gave up after ten minutes of queuing...hopefully someone will answer my fault form I raised...

Also noticed that I cannot maintain a high throughput on those sites that I can get to ! - usually I get 122-124 from NTL's newsserver virtually all the time, today I can only get intermittant bursts of that speed then it seems to lose its lock and drops to 4 or 5k and sometimes domain cannot be found errors occur.

Pretty poor show all round

I hope it gets fixed soon... I'm paying £37 for this !
