Re: Napster is not protected!
I just cancelled my 7 day trial and got this email:
If you change your mind, join Napster for only £9.95 a month and continue to enjoy all its benefits. With Napster, you can Save Big with Napster Track Packs:
15 Tracks for £14.25 - Save over 4%
25 Tracks for £22.99 - Save over 7%
50 tracks for £43.99 - Save over 11%
So even if you do pay 9.95 a month, you still have to pay for the tracks.
Meh, I think I'll carry on with allofmp3.com

Yes, the subscripton what i chose was the 9.95 (7-day trial). I have now canceled so I will not be billed for anything as I have cancelled.
Its a loophole. Can anyone else do this? Prehaps the DRM on my machine is buggered?

Re: Napster is not protected!
I have MP9 installed, but not DRM. I'll try the 7 day trial, and see if I can burn off the tracks I download.

I don't think it matters that you've cancelled, you still have to pay for the tracks you downloaded during the trial. Keep us posted when your CC statement comes in

Re: Napster is not protected!
You dont pay for tracks you download, only for stuff you buy, which is for burning.
Downloading just means you can listen to stuff offline, which is covered under the 9.99 subscription. Or free on the 7 day trial.
Once I subscribed a box poped up saying it was configuring Media Player 9. But I can still play the WMA's under winamp.. Have loads of albums on the download queue already. Will try burning some later.

Re: Napster is not protected!
What bitrate are they encoded at?
MP3's sound **** at 192k or less.... Can i get an ISO of a CD? I dont like it when tunes are compressed.

Re: Napster is not protected!
Stuff you download is 128kbit WMA. Dont know if the buy options are the same or not. Personally I would've liked to see a little higher bit rates. I guess 128kbit WMA is akin to 160kbit mp3.

Re: Napster is not protected!
Probably 128kbps WMA with DRM or possibly 96kbps WMA if the samples are anything to go by.
I have installed Napster, but only on my 'test' drive which has Windows XP Professional installed. First reactions are that it seems to overwhelm your screen - even on 1152x864. Also if you try and view artists and albums by genre, all the artist's names are not in alphabetical order - this makes it difficult (for me at least) to find the artist I am looking for without scrolling up and down trying to find the name.
However I do like the feature where you can browse through the singles charts from nearly 10 years ago. Also the 30 second clip feature is useful and I spent quite a good hour or listening to 30 second clips of albums which are out now and to singles from a while ago.
All of the clips are 30 seconds long and they seem to be badly edited - they just just off at the end rather than fade out. Also they just seem to select a random part of the song rather than the main bit and some sound nothing like the song as I have heard it before. Whether it is due to the quality of the encoding I'm none too sure. Also be prepared for Americanisms even though this is supposed to be the UK version - they call it "Fall" rather than Autumn. Duplicate entries also appear as well for certain chart periods - I suppose this is for songs who have been on the charts for weeks on end between seasons.
There is also the 'sync n restore' feature for transferring your DRM licenses between Windows computers...
If the clips are anything to go by, the quality varies between songs. Some sound OK whilst others sound totally ****e because of the compression.
I can't seem to be able to download anything without having to enter card details - surely a no card required trial would be good to those who do not have a credit card?

Do you have another computer that you can move the WMA file to? One without the Napster software on it? Will it play on there too? Also, can you burn these tracks to CD?
It might be part of the 7 day trial to be able to download them. Try again once your 7 days is up.

I don't think anyone has cracked the MS DRM yet (they might have done, but it's not widespread - unlike the iTunes hack)
WMA is very secure, which is why the record companies are favouring it right now over AAC files.
