Exactly, because of the film rights, etc. However, in a couple of years or so, this could all be transformed. However, we've got to get it first!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

I would be very surprised if there was any technical reason why the US Tivo Netflix app couldn't be added to the VM Tivo. It's all down to whether VM want it added. On two occasions Neil Berkett has suggested that they do, yet nothing has happened. VM seem as confused as to whether they really want it, as we do as to why we haven't got it. But I still don't understand why people are making a fuss about VM not having it when there are better Netflix alternatives out there.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

From reports this morning it looks like Spotify is planning to join Netflix and LoveFilm in offering VOD. As Spotify is already available on TiVo I wonder whether any new service will make it onto Virgin Media boxes in the near future.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

The UK and US Apps the same - the selection you get is based on your location.

A UK user gets the US selection by faking their location - but I don't know if you can do this on a VM TiVo.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

I have had a look at Netflix, Picturebox and Lovefilm and in my own opinion-they are all cr*p!

There is no real decent content on any of them-not enough to for a subscription anyway!

Nope you wouldn't be able to as you can't edit the DNS settings for the inbuilt connection

Because Netflix are just setting up over here and they are set to bid for movie contracts currently held by Sky. Furthermore, we don't all have the equipment to access Netflix through our TVs and resent paying more to get it when it should be perfectly possible to add it as an app on the TIVO (either ppv or subscription).

2011/12 was the year for Broadband, 2012/13 has been the year for TV - let's hope that 2013/14 is going to be the year for some really good TIVO apps on Virgin Media.

If VM don't do something soon they are missing a trick in attracting and retaining customers. 'Connected' TVs have already put the TIVO to shame in terms of apps, and as more and more people buy these TVs, the TIVO will start to become less significant in terms of a 'must have' piece of kit.

As far as the American version of Netflix is concerned, this would obviously be preferable for VM TIVO users, but Netflix are not contractually permitted to do this, so the technical issues are irrelevant. Netflix have to negotiate separately for the rights to show their content in Britain.

Exactly, by faking their location. You don't seriously expect a reputable company to encourage this practice, do you?

I don't understand this new attitude that because you have the technical ability to get around something that is disallowed, it's OK. As by doing this you are depriving the content owners of income from outlets here in the UK (such as Sky) and indeed you are depriving Sky of subscription income as well for the material they show on their channels such as Sky Atlantic, you are probably committing an offence if this is what you are doing. I would imagine that this is a fraudulent activity or just pure theft. Are you comfortable with this?

Just as people are beginning to become aware that they cannot commit defamation over the internet without consequences, I am sure the law will sooner or later catch up with those who watch stuff illegally (in fact a start on this has already been made for the higher profile abuses). Better watch out, this 'laissez faire' approach to content piracy will not last.

If you look at the massive archive tv content available on Netflix US - you would see the appeal.

A lot of the stuff from 50s to 80s is not available anywhere in the UK - not even on DVD.

The films on Netflix US you can find in the UK (somewhere) - so I have no dispute about them being blocked.

If Lovefilm comes to TiVo - lets hope they will provide HD video (which they do not for PS3 users) and 5.1 audio (which they do not for any UK user).

You mean you seriously don't know? You should not be faking your location in order to access films and other material not designated for access to this country. If it was legal, you wouldn't have to fake your location, would you? Sky only have the right to show their HBO content in this country - they can't suddenly decide to make it available to other countries.

It is important that people understand this. You get away with what you get away with in this life, but believe me, the noose is tightening. I wouldn't want anyone on this forum to be caught with their pants down.

So to speak.

I agree with you, it's all too tempting! However, I am sure that the British selection will improve markedly over the next few years as rights are acquired to show this material in the UK.

I was trying to find the link, but can't. Someone who runs a Netflix related site, checked with Netflix about using a service such as Unblockus, which is a form of VPN, and Netflix have no problem with it.

I pay for both Netflix and the Unblockus service and never download pirated copies of any film or TV show, whether free or not.

Whether a service such as unblockus is breaking any laws is sometimes debated on forums, with no conclusive answer. So I think of it as a grey area, but one that I feel comfortable living with.

If the whole content distribution system was reformed, then non of this would be necessary. As, as I said, I will not download pirated content from file sharing sites, but it is useful to note that it was the illegal file sharing activity that eventually forced the music industry to set up legal forms of streaming with fewer territorial content barriers. The film industry really should have taken note of that.

And with regard to separate Netflix devices apart from Tivo, A laptop can easily be hooked up to the TV, many new TVs and Blueray players have Netflix apps, and you can get a streaming device, which is very small and neat from around £50.
