As it says really, the higher the grade (1-8) the harder the piece/standard. No logic to it, but 5 is approximately GCSE standard, and 8 is approximately A-level.
You can sit exams for each where you have to prepare 3 pieces, scales, etc and perform them in front of an examiner - not strictly from memory but you can do if you want to show off (singing is the exception where you have to sing from memory).
8 is the highest, after that if you want to, you can sit recital exams etc etc and get long strings of letters after your name at music schools etc etc. Isn't really much point though, unless you actually want to do music as a career.

Cool, just wondered as i have a friend who says she plays to grade 6 standard and i was like "huh". I wouldn't have a clue ablout it really.
I may finally get around to learning this dreaded guitar soon as well :p Had it over 6months now...

Grade 6 is ok, but the gap between the standard of the higher grades gets bigger as you go up.
