Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

when I have some more time i'll go through the stats and find out where the previous winners finished in their league from 55 to today..

still think if UEFA didn't ruin the comp with that stupid leage thing then a side who could only manage afifth placed finish would have been able to win the comp anyway.. and if Gerrard never dived for a pen then they wouldn't have won it either

the whole league thing is just designed to give the clubs extra games which equals extra tv money and gate receipts and is geared to mean the top clubs from Italy, Spain, UK, Germany get through.. in the event that this doesn't happen they will get third and then go into the UEFA Cup..

it should just be winners of the league and the holders and have done with it

And I completely agree with that last line.

Bring back the CWC, winners of the cups can go in that (LDV Vans as well, pretty please ), 2nd-5th can go in UEFA cup... get rid of the league ******** and return it to knockout, totally unseeded, etc etc.

When we won our first we were drawn against (holders) Liverpool in the first round - a tie pitting the top 2 in England together - and no-one even gave us a chance.

I also think Man City should take the extra European place too.
Nope. The problem is the number of teams. If England only had 3 teams which entered, then there wouldn't have been this fuss. UEFA didn't say Liverpool couldn't defend it but it was up to the English FA to decide what 4 teams entered the competition.

What extra European place? There is none as Artemia went into the UEFA cup. Remember Artemia only enter the Champions league IF the holders have qualified via league position. If the holders have not qualified by league position then they take Artemia's place.

Here is the UEFA rule...

Quote:
Rule 1.3 states: At the request of the national association concerned, the Uefa Champions League title-holders may be entered for this competition ... if they have not qualified via the top domestic league championship.

"If, in such a case, the title-holders come from an association entitled to enter four teams for the Uefa Champions League, the fourth-placed club in the top domestic league championship has to be entered for the Uefa Cup."
This is what the fuss is about - The FA didn't have the balls to do this.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Champions League should just be the champions of each league and the current holders hence the name. The changes they made only served to make the top clubs richer and to downgrade the uefa cup, it is also a mockery that when a team gets booted out of the champions league they then enter the uefa cup at a late stage, how would people feel if here when someone is knocked out of the fa cup semi final they then go into the league cup semi final, I dont think they would be too happy.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

the problem with the ECC is that UEFA bowed down to the G14 clubs and went for the league format so they could get more games.. then they gave into the G14 again and then openned this up to even more clubs in 98 and beyond.. the clubs didn't care won bit about history or the prestiege of the comp now that they were ruinning it for the fans they just wanted more money.. UEFA are meant to be there to protect the game from this and they failed when they created the Champion's League

The other problem is that now the ECC and the UEFA Cup are pretty much going to be one by a club from the big four \ G14 of Italy, Spain, Germany and UK.. there is no chance of a Eastern European club getting to a final and winning anything and that's the way the G14 want it.. although there have been one or two exceptions, CSKA Moskva this year in the UEFA Cup.

Just look at this year when David Gill of Man U said after we got knocked out that we shouldn't have played AC Milan because they were a better side than us.. we could have played someone not as good so we could get to the next round

I've emailed the BBC requesting Manchester United be removed from the sports pages, and inserted into the Business & money section.

The greatest game he'll have of his life will be next season when West ham come to Old Trafford and they beat us 1-nil

No matter what our forwards throw at him, he'll stop every shot. You just watch.

damn man united really cannot keep the same strikers very long, at least 1 major new one every year, they just keep throwing money at the team.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Chelsea are also interested in Owen and Fergie is meant to be after Jenas as well..

also that Mikel the 18yo we signed is still saying he wants to play for Chelsea instead..

there's always FC United though

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Chelsea havent really been doing the same kind of team changes as long as man united they started doing it when the russian tycoon moved in.

Last few years alone have seen these strikeforce changes at man united all multi million pound buys.

Rooney
Smith
Saha
Van Nistelroy

Attacking player but not out and out striker
Ronaldinho

I heard romours that saha is on his way out which would make sense if owen is coming, seems fergie just cant make his mind up, compare the turnover of players to arsenal.

I support neither club by the way.
