Clearly so. They aren't presumably compulsory though, which is the important point for me. It is the school's building, although pupils should have a say in how it is used the ultimate decision is with the school. I think the school should have just told the objecting parents although they were trying to seek a compromise ultimately they weren't budging and it was upto the parents whether they sent their daughters to the gym or not.

Despite other people saying about alternatives, gyms don't grow on trees, I'd have thought it would be quite a challenge to find something suitable for the youngsters and locally.

Told them what? Maybe that they should take their money elsewhere? Perhaps they were given the impression that there would not be ANY boys at the school and that is why they PAID their money in the first place. Ultimately it's the PARENTS' (who pay the money) decisions as to what happens to the school; seeing they are the ones PAYING the money.

To be frank, if my children's school had a governor (or councillor, depending on which newspaper you belive in) as ignorant as the one reported here, I would not want them going there at all.

Told them that taking all the different views into account that that was their decision. Just because the parents pay good money does not make a wrong based on religion or other reasons, right. The parents objecting have not put forward any cogent reasons as far as we know as to why the school should go along with their view. I don't have a problem with the decision necessarily going the way of the parents if there is a good discussion based on rationality and all sides agree. Saying I pay good money or my religion tells me to do something is not a proper reason.

But there is no evidence, in any of the reports, which says that is the reason. There is no evidence that it is ALL Muslim parents that have complained. Perhaps there are just as many non-Muslim parents complaining, as there are Muslim parents. But there are some that would rather believe exaggerations and uncorroborated reports, in newspapers renowned for stirring these things up.

It's quite simple. Even if it didn't have anything to do with muslim parents, it wouldn't change my feelings on the matter. I have slight sympathy with the school as it is independent. However, as all I have to go on says it might have been something to do with religion I have passed comment on this.

I wonder if the Express, Mail or Sun would report stories like these if the main protagonists were not Muslim? I think we know the answer to that.
We can all see the strength of feeling raised just in this thread, do these so called newspapers not have a responsibility to be a bit more even handed in these stories? it seems to me hardly a day goes by without one of these papers reporting a Muslim story.
All three of them are in my opinion contributing to a drip drip effect of hatred, if these things are really going on as each of these papers say you'd be forgiven for thinking that every Muslim in Britain was trying to surreptitiously destabilize the country.
The way things are going those real haters of Britain, the twenty or so mad mullers who booed our soldiers homecoming, seem to be achieving their goal of causing a rift between normal Muslims and the rest of the population.

Well, leaving aside the fact that paying for something and expecting to receive it is a perfectly rational argument, I think your passage through life is going to be a fraught and difficult experience if you believe issues of lifestyle and morality can always be determined by 'rationality'. You're on a hiding to nothing with that.

Unfortunately, rationality and religion do not always mix. This isn't an attack on religion, just trying to point out that people have differing ideas of what is rational which may be influenced by religion. Having said that, people and rationality don't always mix..
