Hey, they enabled lots of Virgin Media Super Hubs in September, they just un-enabled them again afterwards. Nobody said they'd stay enabled

This service might be a way for someone to work out how oversubscribed their node is :p , drive around counting the wifi access points.

I can work out how oversubscribed my node is by the speeds that I get at home!

By the way, I nerded myself round parts of RG41 5 when the VM Public WiFi was being advertised. I passed perhaps 500 homes and noted only two Public WiFi beacons.

You can't really extrapolate that out to a wider take up though. All depends what hardware those 500 homes had in them and whether that hardware was in the trial or not.

Don't see how that would make any difference. It won't have any more range than the existing user's home network, most of which are left on the default name anyway, and the ones that are not are trivially easy to identify as VM Superhubs nomatter what you call them.

CUSTOM being the word. It always seems to be VM,s "CUSTOM" firmware that causes issues. Should be used to it now.

Correct. I was just saying.

When the trial runs properly, I'll take my clipboard and do all the streets like I did before when I surveyed the cabinets and optical nodes. Our area has some 3,000 homes passed. Actually 500 isn't suchj a small percentage.

What I'm expecting to see is that in the streets with very short front gardens, there would be a higher proportion of homes passed than thos with longer front gardens. My area is about 50/50 in that distribution. My results will be overlaid onto my homes passed map.

I'm wondering what you are looking for Seph.

As you no doubt know, the "normal" VM customer just wants a connection for emails, social networking etc (sad reflection on society).

How would they know or care if their SH's had been upgraded to allow public access?

On the point of "Public access" I would assume it would be implemented the same as Sky, BT etc where account holders could use it but anyone else would have to pay for access.

Seeing as Gregs Bakery (to name just one) supply cloud access I cannot see a problem.

Personally I just see this thread as "Yeh OK, so what, everyone else is doing it."

Why all of a sudden when it will be speed resticted it would cause congestion beggars belief.

I'm just a nerd who is interested in statistics, Pip.

VM are promoting their own version of BT FON - which I admit can be useful.

So, in my area, which I had already mapped for cabinets & nodes, I'll walk the walk and note the number of BT FONs and VM Public WiFi.

I'll post the results in the VM Forum (Superusers) and await my curry offer from VM.
