I don't see why the fact that it's LLU should have any bearing on what the cap is. Just because the offerings so far have been pretty poor, that doesn't mean it has to stay that way.

Because with LLU they are not paying BT an exhorbitant amount of cash for that bandwidth.

for the price it's miles away from any competitor. as all ADSL customers must pay a line rental of £10-£11 a month please tell me of another supplier of ADSL which for £10 on top of that line rental gives you 'upto' 8meg plus free local/national calls plus free calls to various international places? Plus a 40gig usage allowance? I think you'd find it difficult to find all of the above even if you dropped off the free calls aspect.

---------- Post added at 15:33 ---------- Previous post was at 15:32 ----------

look at bulldog - £18.50 plus the line rental for a similar product = £30 a month.

Doh! I think we'll have to talk in only bits and bytes on this thread to avoid confusion. I meant 42949672960 bytes, or 343597383680 bits.

I bet they actually limit it to 40000000000 bytes anyway, but that's another (very old) topic.

Neither of those are true (nor is guarantee spelt correctly) 25%+ can get the 8Mbit sync speed on ADSL in the UK (actually works out to about 7.15Mbit/s 'real' speed), 85%+ can get over 2Mbit.

NTL can't guarantee 2Mbit any more than I can guarantee a meteor strike on the Whitehouse today at 6PM, however much I'd like to be able to do that.

Probably, that is what 40GB is after all (fact, International Standards Organisation, etc inform of this. Linux User Groups may dispute it but they are wrong).

Nope CPW will be using MaxDSL to deliver the service, meaning an upload speed of ~ 400kbit/s. When they LLU they may choose to increase this to up to 768kbit/s.

It's free? WTF do you want? Even the £10 a month they want for non-LLU is a great deal. Most LLU @ £10 a month or so is heavily capped, and a tenner a month for 40GB outside of LLU is a steal.

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB

To be honest with you it really is a great deal (if they don't do a Bulldog - which they seem to be doing, tried to ring CPW esales today and got told the queues were down to the launch of this product!). The only issue I have is that it's an 18/12 month (not too sure which both keep being mentioned) contract.

Saying that I have 6 months to wait out until my FREEtalk service runs out so perhaps I'll wait and see what Sky's offering is.

Following Talk Talk's offer, NTL has brought out a offer to match even better!
This offer is only via enquiry only as they are not advertising this offer until they identify how many users take up the talk talk offer, but it is available from today. Phone them up and ask.
Lets compare:

Details for Talk Talk
£29.99 set up fee
40GB cap download limit per month
Upto 8MB download speed (realistically less than 5% will get 8MB, most will get 1MB/2MB)
18 Month Contract
Telephone line
Call plan - talk talk
£20.99 a month

Details for NTL:
Free set up - no fee
Unlimited Download Limit per month
2MB Broadband (garanteed)
12 Month Contract
Telephone line
Talk unlimited 24 call plan
£20.99 a month
How many people have managed to get this offer, as when I rung up they knew nothing about it. At least I managed to get my monthly bill down from £50 to £24 for 3 months when I threatened to leave.

Will be interesting to see if ntl change their mind about allowing stupid contract-less retentions deals if they end up having to give too many of them away.

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB

right to me this doesnt look like such a good deal there are several things that concern me with this excuse me for sounding negative but i will make these points
1. there is an 18 month contract if you get poor service seems your stuck
2. 40gb download sounds good but i wonder if there will be traffic shaping with it if not in the future cos of p2p apps
3. you buying this for the phone essentailly whats to stop them once on board from changing there tariffs on the phone lines once you are happily using away just a thought

some info for those that didnt know the reason the networks gone to 8mb is cos BT is launching later on in the year an on demand tele service which if you want buy a box for about 200gbp so there network needed up grading to carry the streams for that you will get some downloads free and the rest they will charge
The reason the LLU only went to 8mb not the 24mb a friend of mine works in the internet control room for telewest was telling me to go 24mb need a router that costs 60,000gbp and needs 8 cards costing about 10,000 each so for every exchange you looking to spend in the region of 250,00gbp thats alot of money to recoupe and the odds are bt will not upgrade this for at least i reckon about 7-10years unless they need to costs are too high on equipment
I personally was looking going with pipex 27.99pm 2months free for migrating have to buy 3000mins for phone 4.99 instead of 11.99 but there are NO download limits NO traffic shaping etc 12month contract so overall for me better deal till i cant get 24mb from only 2 suplliers in country www.bethere.co.uk and www.ukonline.co.uk unfourantely for me i dont live in london i reckoning at least 2yrs away from me may be far as 5 but personally i'm all for price wars there are too many isp providers atm most of them still only offering 2mb as fastest available when my exchange has been already upgraded to 8mb thats the reason i will be leaving bulldog they say cannot upgrade me to 8mb (even though bt says my exchange is now capable of running at that speed and has been upgraded) this is the crucial time over the next year who you will see stands out from the crowd for price with service
Personally for me bulldog has gone totally down hill since cable and wireless has taken over a communications company who does not even have power to do internal transfers between departments and says sorry not my dept you need to phone this one happened 5 times with average call about ten mins to give name etc explain what was going on
Friends of mine are with ntl and say is very rare they get 10mb have done line speed tests etc as for customer service had dealings with them few years ago they had no back up then so they got kicked out of my house long long story i will probably never ever use them again because of such poor customer service and lack of techincal capabilty
as someone once said to me there is nothing such as a free lunch its true
I rather pay a little more for alot more service and no caps
Before i buy from anyone these days i always phone there helplines/customerservice first to guage a real prostective of a company first see how long it takes them to answer and then secondly see how helpful they are can answer questions etc you'd be amazed how many isp provider sales people dont even know what LLU is or some of them cant even tell u if they block some ports etc if fact it scares me that i know more than they do and they are supposed to be the professionals
The only thing i think alot of firms could all do better is to have a proper roadmap of how and when they expect to roll out there own exchanges even if was only rough guide because atm i have found no company to do this only 1 has said please leave your details and when we do your exchange we will conatct you and that was bethere i would say for me that has become the frustration so for the next 2 yrs or so i reckon for me will be pipex anyway i have said my bit i hope this is of help to some of you
Basil

Hi Basil

The rest of it is purely opinion but for the bit above I'm not sure what the Telewest chappy is talking about, and I don't think he knows what he's talking about either.

The kit that CPW buy will do both the 8Mbit and 24Mbit straight out of the box, no extra cost for 24Mbit support over 8Mbit. DSLAM manufacturers don't produce ADSL only cards anymore as far as I know.

No need to load up 8 10k cards in each exchange at all, you add cards as required to connect new customers to, and the chassis itself is the same price whether you are running 24Mbit ADSL2+ or 8Mbit ADSL.

They are advertising the 8Mbit service as they haven't unbundled yet and 8Mbit is the highest they can go. Perhaps in the future they'll go to 24Mbit, their kit will be ready straight out of the box

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB

Someone said something about P2P & Traffic shaping:

Taken from their site:
Does TalkTalk allow peer-to-peer downloading?

We don't stop our customers using file-sharing software (often known as peer-to-peer or P2P), but we keep an eye out for anyone abusing the rules. We will work to restrict P2P users who slow down the network for everyone else (see below). And we certainly don't condone using P2P software to illegally share copyrighted music, or to breach any other local law or regulation.

How is peer-to-peer downloading restricted:

We restrict P2P activity in peak hours to make sure that other general Internet use takes priority (including surfing, email, shopping, gaming and commercial downloads). Between midnight and 8am we allow a greater proportion of P2P traffic.

What if i use peer-to-peer to much:

To stop selfish downloaders hogging bandwidth and slowing things down for everyone else we have a fair use policy. We won't bother you if it only happens occasionally, but if you regularly download excessive amounts using P2P we will get in touch. If you can't change your ways, we may restrict your P2P usage throughout the day. And if all else fails, as a last resort we may suspend your service and possibly close your account.
