my new build issue :)
Hi all - just got all my bits and bobs delivered and started building the new system.
just turned it on - cpu fan spins for a second or 2 then goes off - everything else seems fine. i then turn it off and the fan jumps into life again for a few seconds.
anyone have any ideas? im all upset
i have an inter conroe 2.4 with stock fan + heatsink.
a gigabyte ds4 mobo
enermax 500w liberty psu
2gb geil ddr2.
and a radeon x1800 xt
no hard drive or cd rom plugged in yet.
i have every power connector i can see plugged in. (is that a bad idea?)
i have 2 atx12vx2 plugs so they are both in.
i also added the extra addon for the atx connector so thats all plugged in.
any ideas? is it something to do with atx 12v?
i have tried it with and without the gfx card and same results.
i assume its not a memory issue as the fan would still continue to spin (i hope) if it was a memory error.
the psu fan happily spins around and so does the case fan.
could it be the heatsink isnt on properly? i did give it a good push until it went clunk .

Re: my new build issue :)
how long are you giving it? My fan spins stops then starts again. I take it your using a 24 pin psu and either 4 + 4 12 v or the single ? Did you power up the gfx although if you didnt it would beep a lot lol did you put a molex into the pci -e power connector on the board also? Try pressing and holding the power button for a 10 count and releasing
This happened to me with this board for I cant remember how I fixed it lol

Re: my new build issue :)
im giving it about 5 seconds - dont want to risk damaging my expensive cpu
gfx (when plugged in) whirls away fine.
i will take a pic. maybe that will help.
No i did not plug a molex connecter into the pci e slot on the mobo i have a connector on my psu going straight to the gfx card. i will try that
btw i could only screw in 2 screws for y psu both on the right hand side - maybe thats affecting it? its safe and secure.

Re: my new build issue :)
5 seconds might not be giving it long enough
The hsf assembly is plugged into the correct connector on the mobo isnt it?

Re: my new build issue :)
Is that because you went for ddr2 800? do you remember my advice on ram
you have 2 options RMA the ram under distance selling regulations and order ddr 2 667 (which I recommended ) or order some ddr2 667 update bios if this is even available yet and rma it back under distance selling

Re: my new build issue :)
It's a POST issue, either it's not set up right, the Mobo is DOA, or something is preventing it.
Remove ALL expansion cards and leave just the PC speaker, power switch and the MB power connections connected to either the PSU and MB. Just the CPU, RAM and power as well as the HSF which will be connected if it powers. Then try again.
Hopefully then the speaker will give out some nice beep sounds. If not pull the RAM again and try again.
If it's still not POSTing the MB is likely dead. Though it could also be the CPU that is less likely.

There is a compat problem with the DS4 board and ddr2 800 this is causing the ram to attempt to post at cas 3 or 4 which is far to tight for this memory. It will be fixed in a bios update at some point
