Cancelling NTL, student but no NUS number

Title says it all really. I phoned customer support, went through all the menus, only to be told in order to cancel my contract after 9 months I needed to give my NUS number as proof that I'm a student. However, not all universitys, such as mine, issue NUS cards with a 18 digit NUS number like NTL need, and I am unable to get an NUS number at this time of the year. The lady on the phone said I couldn't cancel before 12 months without this, so does anyone have any ideas what I can do to actually get my contract cancelled after the 9 months that was agreed with me when I accepted the ntl contract.

Thanks

Re: Cancelling NTL, student but no NUS number

hi

I found this

Quote:
Some students' unions issue their own local student card instead of the national NUS Card. Therefore, NUS produced the nusonline card, a non-photo card that when used in conjunction with your local union card can provide you with access to national discounts at retailers such as HMV and allow you to activate your card with nusonline.co.uk for more discounts, offers and competitions. If your student card does not contain an 18-digit number of the front, you do not have a national NUS Card or nusonline card. Speak to your students' union to find out how you can obtain one of these cards.

- don't know if that is any help??

Does your university issue you with a library card which also acts as an NUS card? In otherwords does your library card have a logo of NUS on it? If so you could try giving the number that is on that card (if there is one?). Failing that, you could get your university tutor to write you a letter saying that you are and have been a student since 'x' month til now etc etc and then you can send that off to NTL??? That should be more than enough proof for them to cancel your contract? Hope that helps?

Your university should be able to provide you with a "Certificate of full time student status", which is used for council tax exemption but should also be accepted by ntl (it is better proof than an NUS card).

Alternatively, assuming your first bill mentions you being on a student account, you could try arging that they should have checked then, as that was when you both accepted the terms of the contract (one of which being the 9 month minimum term)
