Usb To Ethernet!!!
ok guys... need ur helpppp
i was upgraded to 10mb from 1mb, and while talking to Tech Support in India, he sed that i should use ETHERNET instead of USB [to get faster speeds, as the reason i am getting around 4-5mb speeds is because of the USB], so currently i have hooked up 2 computers together using the network cards, but i took out that connection from the computer that the modem is connected to by USB, and connected the modem via ETHERNET to the NETWORK CARD I USE FOR NETWORKING the 2 comps, but the problem is that the internet doesnt work.... its nothing to do with restarting/waiting watever that is, but the problem is that i dont get a IP ADDRESS when the modem is connected to the ETHERNET....
i am thinking is it something to do with the fact that i use that network card for networking and some settings need to be changed?
or is it something else that is preventing me from OBTAINING an IP ADDRESS....
any help would be greatly appreciated
thx...
PS, i am doing this so that i can see whether i was lied to by tech support or really ethernet would increase my speeds by 2mb as sed by him, as if it does make such a difference, then i will go tomoz and buy another network card...

Re: Usb To Ethernet!!!
Most users will see a performance increase by swapping from USB to ethernet, simply because ethernet uses dedicated hardware on your PC rather than general PC resources under USB.
I'm not quite clear from your post exactly how your are connecting, but it sounds like you are not using a router, and thus you are trying to use internet connection sharing. For ICS to be successful your master PC needs two ethernet based network cards.
Using ICS your wiring via ethernet should be:
modem <> master PC network card #1
master PC network card #2 <> second PC network card.
You will need to establish the internet connection on the master PC (remember to reboot that modem and the PC). Once you have the master PC setup OK, you then need to run the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard (check under network connections in Windows).

Re: Usb To Ethernet!!!
In principle ethernet should be faster than USB, but only if it is a 10/100 card, as a 10Mb/s card cannot operate full duplex at that speed.
I'm a bit confused, though - you are only trying to get the one PC online, for now, aren't you? To connect both you will need two cards in the host machine & enable internet connection sharing.
Assuming it is just the one PC & a straight through, not crossover cable, it should simply be a case of turning it all off, connecting the network card to the modem, turning the modem on, leaving it 30 secs for the sync & ready lights to stabilise, then turning on the PC - it should pick up an IP.
<edit> I see Rob C has covered that already

soz i wasnt clear enough for u... ok, let me clarify...
FIRSTLY THERE IS NO ROUTER
2 computers are connected via ethernet directly.
master computer has modem connected directly via USB.
IGNORING the network connection, using the SAME NETWORK CARD on the master pc, i want to connect the MODEM using ETHERNET. Doing so after the computer starts up the internet fails to work since i cannot obtain an ip address....... once the internet starts to work on the master computer, then i can get another network card and get it going on the secondary computer, BUT IT WONT WORK ON THE MASTER COMPUTER IN THE FIRST PLACE
btw, sorry for posting in wrong section... [again ], but this isnt about the networking part, but about connecting via ethernet in the first place

MY NETWORK CARD IS THIS...
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
but i am not too sure about the speed of 10/100mb thingy....
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
yes i want to only get the master comp online, but IT WILL NOT OBTAIN AN IP!!!..... that is the prob!!!

Re: Usb To Ethernet!!!
OK, working solely with the master PC and it's Realtek card, and the modem. Nothing else connected to the modem or PC and just one straight through ethernet cable.
Turn off all firewalls, andtivirus and the like (we can turn them back on later once we prove there is a connection.
Ensure the realtek card is enabled (check network connections), and has the latest drivers loaded. Check in Control panel that there are no other network devices ghosting around.
Delete any old USB network drivers (warning you may not be able to get back online via USB once you've done that).
Make sure the Network card properties are set to automatically receive an IP address.
Make sure your internet explorer settings are also set to automatically detect (Tools > Options).
When you are wired up, are the lights on the modem and network card lit? If they don't light try a different cable.
Make sure you are rebooting the modem and PC whenever you disconnect whatever setup you have been posting to this thread with and connect up the PC network card to the modem. The modem will not detect that the connected devices have changed with out it being powered off and back on again.

yes that is a 10/100 card & should work with no problems.

Re: Usb To Ethernet!!!
Not sure on this but could it be the wrong cable configuration i.e. crossover is used for ICS .. can't remember what should be used for modem to PC, but think it should be straight through.
So the ex. share cable would be wrong to connect to the modem.

i havent had the chance to do wat rob has sed, but i use the BLUE CABLE provided by ntl when using the ethernet for the modem, otherwise for the 2 comps i use a yellow patch cable...

DEFINATELY NOT THE PROB
Ensure the realtek card is enabled (check network connections), and has the latest drivers loaded. Check in Control panel that there are no other network devices ghosting around.
ENABLED, but ghosting around means wat?
Delete any old USB network drivers (warning you may not be able to get back online via USB once you've done that).
WAT IS THIS?
Make sure the Network card properties are set to automatically receive an IP address.
YES THEY ARE
Make sure your internet explorer settings are also set to automatically detect (Tools > Options).
WORKS FOR USB, so nothing should change for ETHERNET?
When you are wired up, are the lights on the modem and network card lit? If they don't light try a different cable.
MODEM LIT YES, ASSUME NETWORK CARD IS LIT SINCE IT WORKS FOR NETWORKING THE 2 COMPS
Make sure you are rebooting the modem and PC whenever you disconnect whatever setup you have been posting to this thread with and connect up the PC network card to the modem. The modem will not detect that the connected devices have changed with out it being powered off and back on again.
DEFINATELY DOING THIS!

Re: Usb To Ethernet!!!
hmm, you can't 'assume' the network card light is on, is it on or isn't it?
You could have a faulty cable - try it with the patch cable, many NTL modems will auto-negotiate the connection (It is stb's which are fussy)

patch cable seems a good idea.... not possible to connect the other end of it tho since the wire is secured, will have to borrow some1's... can i have urs
