Very basic network question

First time for me on the forum and a very basic question. My NTL broadband is fed from the STB with the RJ45 at the PC end connected via an adapter to a USB port. Hope that makes sense! When installing a cable router do I take the cable out of the USB adapter and plug into the WAN socket of the router then link router port back to USB adapter and hence to the PC?

Re: Very basic network question

Brian,

to CF.

Pretty much correct.

You need an RJ45 cable from STB to router WAN port. You then need another RJ45 from a router 'client' port to your PC (or USB adapter). Most routers will come with an RJ45 cable. You will get better performance if you add a £10 LAN card to your PC, but that assumes you are comfortable opening the PC, installing the card and that there is room in the system.

Note - you will need to powercycle the STB when you put the router in place. You will also need to register the router first time it's plugged in - details here.

Re: Very basic network question

Arogorn. Thanks for a simple and clear answer to a simple question. I already have the LAN card installed but for some reason I went the USB option when installing broadband. Brian
