Pathetic Upload Rate - Normal?

I run a website so I am often uploading files, but I generally find my upload rate peaks at around 12kb/s. People I know on other ISPs get about 30kb/s, so why is mine so slow?

Also when uploading I find my download speed slows dramatically.

Hi Cheeez,

Depands on what service you are on to the upload speed.

When your downloading after each packet you recieve your computer send a ACKnowledge ment to say it was recieve ok. If your maxxing your upload then these ACK's get slowed down leaving your computer and the computer your downloading from slows down the sending as it assumes you can't download very fast.

Re: Pathetic Upload Rate - Normal?

sounds like you are on the 1Mb/s service, which has a max upload of 100Kb/s - about 12KB/s

If you were on the 2Mb/s service, upload is 200Kb/s - about 25KB/s (ignoring overheads)

I sounds like the 'other ISPs' are offering 256Kb/s - about 30KB/s, as you say.

The reason your downloads suffer is that if you saturate the upload stream, the ack packets can't get through, in time, & a lot of data is re-sent.

Sorry I forgot to say. I'm on the 2MB service.

that doesn't seem right, then - what do you get from the speed test link at the top of the forum page?

Re: Pathetic Upload Rate - Normal?

I'm on 10mb and upload is constantly in excess of 60 KB/s. So nothing wrong here, apart from these dns outages as discussed in another thread...

Re: Pathetic Upload Rate - Normal?

Go to adslguide.org and try their speedtest, it will test your upstream, your downstream looks ok so I don't know whether your upstream is going to say anything different.

Re: Pathetic Upload Rate - Normal?

also try to upload to a different source it is possible that your web server has problems causing the slow upload or it is just really bad routing between you and the server.
