moved to ntl broadband forum.
if you connect a new device, you'll reach the provisioning page, and this will tell you how many computers are registered already.
Alternatively, contact ntl tech support and they can tell you.
I believe there isn't any other way of checking without connecting an unrecognised device.

with set top box connections, each device is registered by mac address onto the network. When new devices are added they have to be provisioned- this can be done with upto 5 devices

Some customers on the Bromley platform connect via their STB for their Broadband Connection, they use a PID number and password to register PC's onto the provisioning account, the system allows upto 5 pc's to be registered. This means if they try to use a different pc then they have to register it first before they can use it for BB. They have a signal sent to the STB for their speed so if they want to change up or down, they have to go through the process to re-register again.
Cable Modems are so much easier  Once they are registered that's it, use whatever PC you want without any messing about

ah - cheers for that. I have ofted heard about the fabled set top box and it always sounded a bit wierd

If you have a router connected to the STB of course, changing the computer doesn't require re-registering. Changing the STB of course does require re-registering...

Of course it doesn't as it has the MAC address of the router registered and doesn't even know the PCs are there. However, unless you clone the MAC address of the old router to a new on when you get it (copy it over) then you will need to provision for the new Router.
