Problem with incorrect asigned static IP on NTL...

I'm using NTL broadband, and have a static IP address which is based on my customer ID. Today for some reason the IP changed to another, and I started receiving thousands of requests on port 6346 (which are Gnutella searches).

I checked google and it said try and get the IP reassigned. So I rang the NTL helpline (which was 50p a minute, great) and they said they couldn't reassign the proper IP address, I had to reconnect using a USB interface to the modem, and then go back to the ethernet connection.

So I tried connecting with my friend's laptop via USB (as my PC is upstairs I cannot connect it via USB). Once the drivers were installed, the laptop was connected to the internet with the correct IP address. I then reconnected my PC via ethernet, but it went back to the wrong IP adress. I also tried reconfiguring the net connection using the CD but to no avail.

Is there any way I can reset the IP address to what it was originally, because whoever this one belongs to, it appears it was a limewire server or something because I'm receiving lots of incoming traffic on port 6346. Is it worth taking my PC downstairs to plug it in via USB and then trying ethernet again? If there's another method I'd rather do that because it's an **** taking the whole thing downstairs!

Thanks.

Do you use ntl cable residential service or business? because on the residential service static ips are not available.

Or is it ntl:freedom...?

Home customer. But the IP address had been the same before until now...

cpc*-leed*-*-*-cust***.leed.cable.ntl.com

86.11.***.***

This info had been constant since I started using ntl. Now the IP is different in the last 3 digits.

Oh and thanks for the welcome

If you're a home user your IP address is NOT static, it may not change very often but it is not static.

Fair enough, I got it wrong, but that still doesn't answer my question...I need it to change and ntl told me they can't do it...

if you need it to change, your best bet would be to power down the cable modem for half an hour...the longer the better, and while its off hope for the IP address you have at the moment to be assigned to someone else

That rarely works - I turn off my pc and modem every night and never get another IP when it gets turned back on in the morning. The best way to do it is to go Start>Run
type in command.com
when you get the c:> prompt type in ipconfig /release (press enter) then type in ipconfig /renew (press enter) hopefully that will give you a new IP. It won't matter anyway due to the fact that you will still be behind an NTL proxy (the 86.XX.XX.XX IP you are seeing)

And NTL Helpline isn't 50p a minute - that's the Dialup helpline. 0871 225 1111 Broadband helpis 10p a minute.

Re: Problem with incorrect asigned static IP on NTL...

Just read the first post again properly. Thousands of requests for a port would not be because you have a new IP and that IP used to be a server for a P2P package. You have either a) peed off an IRC script kiddy somehow or b) someone has got a phished/hacked pc and your IP range is being bombarded with requests by it. If your box was compromised (usually due to not updating Windows regularly or spyware/viruses) then something would have been listening at that port and accepted the requests. It looks like this hasn't happened.

Best advice is to tell your firewall to deny all access attempts to that port. In a couple of days the attack vector will move on to another IP range. It happens alot with the Sasser worm.

Re: Problem with incorrect asigned static IP on NTL...

Well I changed the IP using the advice from Chris W, changed the NIC MAC address, reset everything and got a new IP. Now I'm not getting the traffic anymore. Thanks chris!

grubbymitts: My security is fairly good, I'm pretty sure it wasn't someone trying to hack me...anyway it's sorted now!
