How far can you wire a wireless router?

Is there a maximum distance a wired wireless router (Netgear WGT624 v3) can be from the desk top PC
At present the router is wired to my PC downstairs, Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m wondering if I was to place the router upstairs but still wire it to my PC, would my sons lap top have a more stable connection.

Ethernet cable has a maximum distance of around 100m, plenty far enough for the average house.

Wireless manufacturer's will claim 100m, 200m. But thats, with no walls or other obstructions in the line of sight. As you get close to the limit the connection speed you can achieve will drop

Problems with interference, and poor connection will often be reduced by moving the wireless setup closer, but not necessarily.

You may also find a slight increase in speed by using the higher channels. Wireless routers are fairly good at find other wireless networks, and staying off those channels, but certain electrical appliances (particularly kitchen appliances, such as Microwaves) can interfere with the lower channels.
