Question will ntl ever keep up with skys service

I recently saw an advert on tv for the site below...
http://www.sky.com/skybybroadband/home
it seems if you are a sky customer an have ANY broadband connection you can download at no extra cost movies straight to you home computer.
when (if ever) will ntl be offering this or a similar service to its customers instead of the pathetic rubbish thats currently on broadband plus?
Ntl really need to wake up an provide what people want instead of messing people around with a unstable service that costs as much if not more than all the other companys.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

Firstly, you can only access this content if you have a Movies and Sports package on Sky (added expense) and then it installs a slow, buggy client onto your PC which installs P2P Malware that you have no choice over, Runs from when you boot your PC til when you shut it down and there's no easy way of removing it.

Yeah, great service!

ok if this is the case tell me whats my sky customer number? As it asks for it when you try to sign up?

also it states very clearly on the page and i quote
"If you're a Sky digital customer, you can get the following Sky by broadband services at no extra cost"

did you even read it?

Also my question was a simple one, when do ntl plan on offering a similar service, i did not ask how good skys one is an what all it installs.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

obviously it is you that cannot read:
"you can get the following Sky by broadband services at no extra cost:
  • Sky Movies, if you subscribe to Sky Movies
    1 & 2
  • Sky Sports, if you subscribe to Sky Sports
    1 & 2"
So you tell me, is that free or not?

If your going to quote something quote it right an read it first itll save you making an idiot of yourself.... i quote ..

"Sky by broadband is a new service exclusive to Sky digital customers. It allows you to enjoy hundreds of films on your PC, including a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and classic movie titles available on Sky Movies.

In addition, you can enjoy highlights from many of the major sporting events on Sky Sports.

what part of "Sky by broadband is a new service exclusive to Sky digital customers" cant you understand? I draw your attention to the bit that says "SKY DIGITAL CUSTOMERS" and the word "EXCLUSIVE" may be this will help you http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=exclusive

But this is not what my question was but as you idiots keep bringing it up, i am subscribed to full sky packages via ntl, movies , sports , the lot, but i am not a sky customer, i am a ntl customer which is why i am posting in the ntl broadband forum and not the sky digital one so once again my question is (for the idiots) when will ntl be offering a similar service.

If you cant answer this simple question then dont post lol

I'm sure you feel big and clever for calling everyone an idiot now. You appear to be the idiot though, it seems quite simple from reading it.

    1 & 2

It's only free if you have already subscribed to the packages. It's not free.

I think NTL are good in some areas and not good in others. You take the rough with the smooth. My Broadband is something Sky don't offer as it's own product yet. I get my 10meg and i wouldn't be able to get it even if Sky released their own broadband as Sky Broadband. I get the Sports and movies package, and i pay half the price for the whole package as a Sky Customer pays for theirs. Both my work colleagues would drop Sky if NTL came to their area just to get the price i am paying.

A PVR is what NTL lack really but it's coming in November so someone said, so i can wait given i am paying far less.

I think Sky released their HDTV as a joke. £300 for a box and £10 a month. That's a complete rip off and for people with more money than brain cells.

Overall, i'd say they are fairly even, people see the PVR as the killer piece of hardware so think NTL are light years behind. They are entitled to their opinion. I think when NTL gets a PVR, it then puts them lightyears ahead.

Edit: Actually NTL have VoD, while the content may not be to everyone's liking, it will expand. Sky don't even have this full-stop.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

Hi!
Just a couple of points about Sky by Broadband. It is quite easy to remove the Kontiki software from your computer. The exact file reqd. is kclean.exe available most directly via a utility on the Kontiki site (amongst others). When Sky by Broadband is not in use (the Khost.exe) and Kservice.exe can be stopped using the services section of Task Manager-thus protecting bandwidth.
Sky by Broadband works and may suit some people but the downloads are relatively slow and WMP player may cause problems depending on the exact installation of the software.HTH.Good luck!

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

From the registration page for Sky by Broadband:

Quote:
To register for and download Sky by broadband, you will need:
  • A PC with Windows XP
  • Windows Media Player version 10 or above
  • A fast internet connection such as broadband (recommended)
  • To subscribe to a package which includes Sky Sports 1 & 2 and/or Sky Movies 1 & 2
  • To be based in the UK or ROI
  • You can only download Sky by broadband to one PC in your household and you must be the Sky digital account holder to download it
I have Sky and broadband, but cannot use the service as I don't have any sports or movie channels!

But to be honest I don't want to wait for ages to download a film then watch it on my PC, much prefer to watch TV on the TV, it's got a bigger screen and better sound!

I think if NTL's VOD gets going properly (we don't have it here yet) - it has the potential to be a replacement.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

ok if this is the case can some tell how a ntl customer puts in the customer number on there sky digital viewing card which the site requests given a ntl customer should not have a sky digital viewing card unless its illegal?. see below
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wasted.d/SKY.jpg
It is clear that this service is only available to those who are subscribed to sky digital an yes in that case it is indeed free, but as ive pointed out a few times i am not a sky digital costumer, i am a ntl customer who would like to be able to download legaly to my pc.
My question was not if this service was free or even if it was any good it was simply if anyone had any idea if ntl planned on offering a similar service were a customer could download movies directly to there pc.

sky by broadband is only available to those who get there digital service from sky digital, so this clearly means that ntl, freeview and telewest customers can not use this particular service. This is why i was wondering if NTL had any plans to introduce a similar service.

Re: will ntl ever keep up with skys service

What a lot of hot air over something so simple.

1. It's only for actual sky customers, not ntl customers.

2. We (currently) know of no plans for a similar service from ntl

Now, let's cut out all the pointless arguing and insulting shall we.
