Any chance of posting a link??

I also use the test at Kbps.co.uk, and you can use a 14.75Mb file for the test. Whilst I appreciate a 512k file is somewhat small for testing 10mb, I generally get the same results here as at Kbps.co.uk. I do occasionaly try downloading large files directly after good test results and, the speed levels out at roughly the test result I got.

I appreciate what you're saying but, with the current fluctuations in speeds, I'm not prepared, or have the time, to repeatedly keep downloading 50-100Mb files. A few quick tests here every so often seems to give me a good indication of what's happening at any given time.

p.s. Cable Forum staff, any chance of a test with some larger files

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Just done some tests.
I usually download ISO's from HEAnet in Ireland, in the past they have always come down at 1024 KB/sec but recently the speed has dropped to 530 KB/sec. As the Irish Speed Test has recently shown a similar drop in speed I put it down to ntl work in progress.

Tonight I decided to check so I downloaded the same file from 2 university sites in England, both sites downloaded at 1140 KB/sec so it would appear that the problem (for me at least) is not with ntl after all.

The Irish speedtesh has slowed down lately. The kbps speedtest page always sends enough bandwidth to test 10 mbps. You can choose to download the 14 meg file,it gives you and idea should be around 1200 kbps.

I was just reading that the Irish Speed Test has been upgraded to a later version during the past few days, that's the reason the results have changed.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Well it may have changed but i just done a test and it gave me 3.89 mbps,i then done a test at another site got this:

File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes)
Total time taken : 12.61 seconds (12610 milliseconds)
Throughput : 1226.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 1.23 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 9808.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 9.81 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

best speedtest is probably a linux ftp mirror preferably in the uk probably on a gig connection something like this.

ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/edunfs1/mirro...d-CD1.i586.iso

700meg file so if you fussy about usage dont let it finish.

*ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion

Anybody here got exactly the same issue? Modem resseting after so long? There's one going on about it below but thats only for ntl home 120 users as a poster commented

I've looked into this a bit, Examples of how to make modem reset:

Extract a big file over SSH, while SSH is reporting what files are being extraced, Modem will reset.

Uploading work/images/psds to FTP (Which I do alot), Modem will reset...

Uploading movies (Such as demo's I have done while playing in a game with friends)

Opening about 4 FTP Clients to upload a forum (To upload faster) - Modem will reset.

Using Bit torrent, Mainly happens when there's loads of Seeds/Leechers connected...

Can't really think of many more examples, Appart from it seems to happen when uploading.

DU Meter during the d/c: http://www.swoopie.me.uk/cutouts_ntlhome100.JPG

Modem info:
Network Access : Enabled
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 bps
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm100_ntl0002.cpr
Software Upgrade AdminStatus : allowProvisioningUpgrade
Software Upgrade OperStatus : completeFromProvisioning

Only really had this problem since 10mb upgrade...

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

This is the site that NTL TS told me to go to (one of their own) whilst I was on the phone to them, she told me to d/load the 50mb file and see what speeds I was getting at the 50% mark... they also told me to go to www.microsoft.com to download software and let them know what speeds I got. I put links in a previous post on these forums to other speed test I have used... all giving me similar results. the best I got was around the 3.3Mb mark... they say to find out your speed in MB's take the result that you get in Kbps and times it by 8, doing this with one of the results I got... 421Kb gave me 3.3Mbits

Just done another test on that 50Mb file and its back to the normal speed, see image below... mind u it is 2:25am hope it's sorted now.. but something tells me it's because its off peak.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I am getting the full 10 Mb, and seem to always do so. I tend to use Microsoft.com for my tests, plenty of big files on there to download. And this is with the ntl:home 120 silver modem. What pishes me off is the crap website speeds and browsing, not downloads. The bloody internet for browsing is wnak.

As far as I know, sometime between now and the end of the year.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

The unstable transfer rates on the 10Mb STB service seem to be fixed now. Still don't get good UK speedtest rates, but downloads from the US are good. Got a steady 779kb/s downloading 3D Mark 2006 (attached).

Time to order the SACM now to get the full whack
