Mysterious problem with email account

I have had active mail accounts with NTL for over two years now with no problems. However, yesterday (having been suspicious of no mail activity on my main account) I checked the inbox via the webmail access of NTLWORLD.COM - Much to my surprise there were unread mails aplenty, yet MS Outlook Express (6.0) was still giving me the following error message -

"There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'SLTD', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92"

My other accounts (one for the wife and kids etc.) are working fine in Outlook. I have checked and rechecked the account server settings and username/passwords and have even deleted the account and re-set it up but am still getting the error. Broadband Medic states there's no problem so I assume it's something with Outlook but am at a loss.

I run Windows XP Home edition with all the latest auto updates and have McFee internet security centre also upto date.

I've searched the boards and the web using the error numbers but have come up short so if anyone has any ideas or can point me in the direction of some further info I'd appreciate it.

Many thanks SMc...

Re: Mysterious problem with email account

I am also having the same problem. Last night i checked my emails with no problems, and this morning i am getting the following error message

A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'Main Blueyonder A/C', Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

I have email the Blueyonder Technical team and they suggested i disable my Anti Virus which i did and all the emails arrived. How ever as soon as i set it to auto protect i get the above error message.

I know last Night Norton did an uptate to my defination and i believe that is causing all the problem, but the only way to check my emails is disable Auto Protect which i am not happy about with the amount of virus about.

Any suggestion?

But of course! Brilliant solution! Where do people most often get infected with viruses and worms? Opening/reading emails! So, if you stop them doing that...

Good old Norton, good old McAfee... same as ever. ;-\

This may have something to do with the way Norton and McAfee handle your email: AFAIK they redirect it through their own servers for checking, and this may be what's not working properly. Don't take this as gospel; I've had nothing to do with either for some time, but that's what they used to do.

I thought Norton being a Popular name it would be reliable. Currently i am speaking to one Norton Technical Staff via Online chat to see what he suggest.

Re: Mysterious problem with email account

Thanks for all the replies and I'm glad someone else has had a good result - my issue was with the McFee security. Like Tanny I was bit bit unsure about messing with the configuration.

Anyway thanks again - I can only second Tanny in "Glad i had this problem as i would have never found this brilliant forum "
