Here's the results for the "upto 5Mb" on the Samsung ;

Sat, 17 Dec 2005 10:47:33 UTC
1st 128K took 1359 ms = 96447 Bytes/sec = approx 802 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 94 ms = 1394383 Bytes/sec = approx 11601 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 188 ms = 697191 Bytes/sec = approx 5801 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 297 ms = 441320 Bytes/sec = approx 3672 kbits/sec

All over the shop, but no apparent packet loss, and good ping times. Always had consistant download rates on the 3Mb service. This is with a Linux firewall/router in place, and the ethernet ports running at 10Mbs

Hmmm, seems to be an issue with the router/firewall and/or Netgear 10/100 switch.

Hooked up my laptop direct to the STB ;

Sat, 17 Dec 2005 12:05:12 UTC
1st 128K took 160 ms = 819200 Bytes/sec = approx 6816 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 170 ms = 771012 Bytes/sec = approx 6415 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 160 ms = 819200 Bytes/sec = approx 6816 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 220 ms = 595782 Bytes/sec = approx 4957 kbits/sec

Also got a consistent 740 kB/sec download on a 45Mb .iso file

NTL 10 meg Broadband

I have been an NTL customer for nearly 10 years and on the whole had excellent service. I was one of the first customers to go on NTL broadband service,

Up until this week December 15th 2005 I was on the 3mb broadband thru my set top box (Samsung) and even though I was sharing this thru a wireless router it never dropped below 2.85mb.
When NTL announced the new 10 mb service for the same price that I was paying for the 3 mb service, and that the cost was coming down in the New Year I decided to go for the 10 mb.
Only to be told that my set top box would only go up to 5mg and that I would have to change to a stand alone modem capable of taking the new 10mb broadband, at a cost of one off payment of £50. I complained about this extra cost because the way I see it why should I be penalised because the box they provided me was not capable of receiving the new 10mg service, and besides I was still expected to pay the same Price has some one who received 3mg, 5mg, or 10mg.

Because of my long service with them, NTL customer service kindly agreed to waver the £50 charge, and on the 15th of December came and fitted the new modem, every thing went smoothly set up no problems I was up and running on the net within 1 hour
I the decided to check my down load speed and upload speed
And the average results were
Download 3.43mbps, upload speed 505kbps no difference than my old set top box speed.
I Contacted NTL customer service and asked them Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve I was on the 10 mb service †œYes you areââ‚Âà ‚¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ I told then that I was still only getting 3meg down load speed, They than passed me on to NTL Broadband technical support.

This is the conversation I had with one of the support Team.
†œWe donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t guarantee 10mb only up to 10mbââ‚ ¬Ã‚ I said I understand that but surly I should be getting faster down load speeds than 3mb,
†œYou see sir it the system it is not been fully tested it will get better over the next few monthââ‚ƚ¬Ã‚.
But you are advertising that you now have 10mb broadband and it says nothing about the system has you call it still being tested.
†œWell thatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s the way it is at the moment Some days youââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ll get 3mb, tomorrow you could get 5mb and some days you may get up to 10mb, but it will get betterââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚
I then ended the call in disgust.

Since then I have continued to check my down load speed with different software and the highest I got was 7.055 kbps but I must say the down load speed is up and down like a yoyo, yoyo, on average never getting above 3.65kbps.
I think that this 10mb broadband from NTL is just a marketing ploy to say we are the first to over 10mb Broadband, I think they are stretching the truth a bit

On the whole I have found I person from NTL Broadband support who has taken the time to rectify this problem, and to whom I am very grateful, has for customer service, they are the worst I have ever encounter, never do what they say they will.

You will note that I said at the beginning that NTL had not charged me the £50 upgrade for the stand alone modem to get the 10mb broadband, if I have had to pay this then I would have been very disappointed, I would recommend donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t pay it, its not worth it.

Re: NTL 10 meg Broadband

not all areas are able to get the full 10MB all the time or even some of the time. thats why it is advertised as upto 10MB.

Eventually the 3MB will become upto 10MB in all areas, although right now it can really vary.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Fire - seems quite stable with a direct connection to the STB.

Looks like my PC i'm running IPCop/Smoothwall firewall/router on is the cause of my problems, so I'm going to upgrade to a wireless router.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Is there a quicker way to upgrade (samsung stb) than filling in the form on the website, and waiting "up to 10 days" for them to call?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Greetings

I am in the Reading area with a Ambit 100 and was upgraded to 10Mbits some time ago. I have not delved into this post for some time. The following is about what I get on average at anytime of day or night:

Sun, 18 Dec 2005 12:07:05 UTC

1st 512K took 703 ms = 728.3 KB/sec, approx 6001 Kbps, 5.86 Mbps
2nd 512K took 656 ms = 780.5 KB/sec, approx 6431 Kbps, 6.28 Mbps
3rd 512K took 672 ms = 761.9 KB/sec, approx 6278 Kbps, 6.13 Mbps
4th 512K took 672 ms = 761.9 KB/sec, approx 6278 Kbps, 6.13 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6247 Kbps, 6.1 Mbps

I know the service is 'up to' 10Mbit... anyway, are the figures above likely to be about right .. or do you think the Ambit is a problem?

ta

Mark

I filled in the form last week, and then called CS about 3 days later to be told that some one will call me shortly. I've got next week off, so It'd be pretty handy if they can come then rather than having to take a day off in the New Year

Guys give ntl some time im sure they will work it out sometime soon, as i see it you are not paying any extra than you was before so its not that bad you not getting the full 10mb.
I work in a call centre and i feel for the staff at ntl it seems like its not run that great and they dont train update there staff.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Hi I am in the Reading area and was only getting 5mb, after doing some reading here, I done away with my Linksys BEFSR41 v.1 router (with latest firmware) and plugged my NTLHome 200 modem direct to my pc's ethernet card. By doing so I can happily say I am now getting the full 10mb.
Thanks for the help, hope this helps someone else.
