Re: Major explosion in Hemel Hempstead

It would depend on where the wind carried the sound.

I heard it loud and clear in Watford, shook our flat and windows, and opened our loft hatch.

There is a large NATO base near my flat as well and we thought that went up in flames at first, was quite concerned.

Re: Major explosion in Hemel Hempstead

I cannot see any of the black smoke, thanks to the wind.

Oh well another excuse for the oil companies to put the prices above £1.00 per litre.

---------- Post added at 13:45 ---------- Previous post was at 13:45 ----------

This will burn to at least friday?

The fire brigades are rushing foam to the scene of the fire from Essex and other areas, why don't they just ask the airport fire services to give them a hand? They have fire engines that create foam and can inject foam onto a fire for hours on end.

I should imagine it's because the foam fire engines are needed at the airport, they are always on call in case of an accident there and can't leave the airport without fire engines, it'd mean shutting the airport.

Re: Major explosion in Hemel Hempstead

Just got back from Hemel.
The fire is still burning well, and the news crews are about (even NBC!)
Will load up some pics later, although they don't do the height of the smoke justice!
The police have sealed off the area, don't know if my gf will be able to go to work tomorrow.

Especially as Heathrow is on the end of a pipeline from the storage facility.

Could a mod delete the posts with the pics in on the first page? The guy who took them has managed to sell them to the sun, and they've asked him to do his best to reduce the amount of people seeing them so they get first poach on em tommorow morning.

Re: Major explosion in Hemel Hempstead

Just got back from Oxford - that involved us driving under the plume as it spreads south-west from Hemel. Very noticeable, got some interesting photos of the sun trying to poke weakly through at about 11am, but the motorway was basically smogged (this would be around High Wycombe). Cleared very suddenly a few miles short of Oxford though, where it was clear, apart from the plume being evident to the south.

On the way back, the temperature was all over the shop - started about 6C in Oxford, went up to 8C under the plume and then dropped to 2C almost instantly out the other side, which caused all the windows to mist up. Scary. Presumably heat's getting trapped under the cloud, but it's a really odd thing to see, like a livid bruise across the sky for about 60 miles.
