2mb running at 750k

Back in August I as upgraded to a 2mb account and my charges went up to £24.99 a month (I own my own CM). Over the past few days I've noticed that I'm running slow on downloads. Check it out and I'm running as about 80(odd)kb. Rang Tech help and The nice Indian lady couldn't even find my MAC address. She told me I was looking at the wrong number and it should have letters in it and mine is only numbers.
Well after a drawn out conversation with me downloading stuff from the Microsoft web site, she decided I was only on 750K (Does it still exist?) and I needed to be upgraded. I told her I have been upgraded but she wasn't having it and told me she'd put me through to someone to be upgraded. On hold I went and I eventually gave up and put the phone down. Anyone got any ideas as to whats going on or how to get hold of the techie's in Swansea rather than a scripted technophobe on another continent.

Did the speed test oh here and got this:

That's right, a MAC address usually has numbers as well as letters in it, richgm. I would think that's probably because it's expressed as a hexadecimal rather than a decimal number. An address with numbers only is usually an IP.

There's a couple of ways you can check your actual speed (from the results you post, I'd say yes, you're probably on a 750Kb service because it's consistent, but that's not a certain indication).

One is to check your modem configuration: open your browser and direct it to the IP address for your modem; it varies according to what your modem is, but mine (NTL:250) is http://192.168.100.1/, and that's fairly common. You'll probably have to enter a password and username; for ntl modems this is often 'root' for both. If you can get in, go to the Configuration page; it should have something like Maximum Downstream Data Rate: 2048000 and Maximum Upstream Data Rate: 200000 if you're on the 2Mb tier.

Alternatively, see the CS article 'How do I check/change my cable modem speed?' for the ntl links where you can check or change your speed.

My Mac address is correct. It is still possible to have a numeric number even when written in hex.
Interesting link. Although I've had a Broadband connection for around 4 years now (My SACM is a surfboard 3100) is says I don't have a broadband account.

Although your cable modem (Mac address: 00:20:40:xx:xx:xx) allows you to access the Internet, you account was not fully registered as an ntl: Broadband Internet account. You do have a dial up account, but your dial up account (XXXXXXX) details can not be currently used to authenticate your cable modem details.

I don't have a maximum downstream or upstream rate displayed for the surfboard.
Might have to resort to ringing Tech help on Monday and keep trying till I get a Welsh accent.

I upgraded to 2meg back end of last week...I'm not even getting 750k this morning! Checked the modem settings which appear OK. Rang Customer Service this morning (Sunday) & auto voice says ring back Monday. Not impressed with this level of service at all.

Should be an option for reporting faults when you ring CS. Use that.

customer services are closed on a sunday but don't deal with broadband faults anyway, you need to ring technical support who are open

Paul you should be getting around 200-250KB/sec for a 2meg connection

Thats luxurious!! Just checked mine again at 334Kbps...now that slow for a 2meg connection. I suggest we have a national 'Slowest NTL Connection' competition, with the winner picking up a free ADSL connection.

Got a speed boost at around 21.00 hrs yesterday, even though I didnt get around to phoning NTL. Current download....

1st 512K took 2185 ms = 234.3 KB/sec, approx 1931 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2183 ms = 234.5 KB/sec, approx 1932 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2382 ms = 214.9 KB/sec, approx 1771 Kbps, 1.73 Mbps
4th 512K took 2187 ms = 234.1 KB/sec, approx 1929 Kbps, 1.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1891 Kbps, 1.85 Mbps

Don't understand whats going on, but will keep checking out the service.

I got the same problem. Called CS on Saturday and again tonight. The outcome of tonights call is that "there must be something wrong with my PC! "

How is your connection at the minute. I have just used "Dan Elwell's Speed Test" from www.broadbandspeeddtest.net/download

I am definately on a 705kbs connection.

Latest update is as follows:
1) NTL billing think I'm on 2meg
2) Tech Support think I'm on 750k (Which doesn't exist any more)
3) the online check that was posted earlier on in the tread thinks I'm still on Dial-up.

My Mac address isn't registered with billing as I own my own modem. I now have to ring tech support get them to walk me through how to register my mac address then ring CS and get them to but me on 2meg. Which I was already on and am getting billed for.

Jackthelad, Have you ever had a 2meg connection?
Also do you own your own modem?
