Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Which cable modems support the full power of 10Mb?
All new Cable Modems that are installed have the capability to supply 10Mb Broadband, but there are other conditions as outlined in these FAQs which may affect the speed.
A very small number of our older modems are capable of supporting download speeds up to 5.5Mb. Go to www.ntlworld.com/upgrade to find out more information. If you wish we will visit your home to upgrade your modem so that you can benefit from the full power of ntl 10Mb Broadband (subject to £50 upgrade charge).
£50 to change my modem to a service that I pay a fortune for!!
Well F**K them I'll cancel my AC and move to ASDL

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Strange that they did`nt give 5 mbit to the 3mbit Samsung users and charge them say £30 with the same useage, with the option to pay the £50 for the modem and 10 mbit.

Moving will almost certainly cost you more than £50 ....

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
It gets even better.
http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/upgrade/
NTL do not even admit that the Terayon modem is not capable of the full 10Mbit service!
Given that those with these older modems are long term customers who have been paying NTL money for probably 4 or more years, it seems madness to try to charge them when the equipment that NTL rents to them is no longer capable of providing the service.
NTL do say elsewhere that if equipment needs replacing then NTL will do so, and in this case it does need replacing, or we should only be paying 8/10ths of the price when the terayon maxes out at 8Mbit

Faster ? - only if you live close enough to the exchange, and the exchange actually provides ADSL2 in the first place.
Cheaper ? - Possibly per month, but then you need to pay for a BT line, and installation.
more organised ? - not necessarily - check out the hell sites for most adsl providers.
I would advise people to think very carefully before spitting their dummies out - the grass is not always greener ......

Something you have to understand.... some companies when it comes to peering etc, just get on with it, get it done and plan for the future. Others have departments that faff around with it all, juggling it between their various other responsibilities, and there's no front line access (the alledgedly engineers on both sides have no influence over peering at all, they only get to implement what they are told - nice to see with those salaries comes responsibility I don't think).
Much smaller ISPs than ntl have more people dealing with peering. I could if requested set up a public peering session in a very short while, and have a couple of times harrassed certain other companies over peering interfaces getting towards congestion because congesting external links upsets customers on an even bigger scale than congesting internal or local ones.
So it wouldn't surprise me if some links were still overpopulated, simply because no-one bothered to plan to upgrade them until they were nearly maxed, and because the upgrading was slightly more time consuming than expected or growth of traffic a bit quicker so the pipes are congested.
Just talking from prior experience with certain companies.
In short I don't know what the issues are, however I find the idea of peering being congested fairly easy to swallow as transit is much more looked after than PIs. Really if a PI is congested or public peering it should be shut down immediately to avoid service affect, however doing that instead of transit costs money, which makes you wonder why ntl's *public* peering policy was at least until fairly recently so completely anal / holier than thou.
But yeah pretty much a lot of the belayed upgrade are probably due to bureaucracy, procrastination and over complication, 3 things ntl historically do well to make sure that the people who are best at these things can keep their jobs. Sorry if this affects your service, but *shrug*
|
Well I sort of guess that ntl will probably prioritise links where common site's go over such as microsoft and indeed creative, I dont know of many major websites hosted in europe. The 15meg is legal by the way, I always rar my backups into 15meg segments now something I got used to doing.
I think the gist of what you saying is the engineer's involved know about it but are powerless as any fixes/upgrades etc. need approving from the top first.

However, if getting the highest possible speed right now is important to you, then you can order a modem upgrade here online for a fee of £50.
|
NTL want to get there act together my above post say £50 to upgrade modem, but the link http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/upgrade/ says £50 to upgrade now. How long do I have to wait to to receive what I pay for. People have had modems replaced for free and got full speed.

Also 10x faster for gaming?? If I am right gaming is now worse because of the contention, and 10x faster streaming, streaming in fast forward mode??
Has anyone noticed this small print?
"10Mb speed is subject to modem capability (£50 upgrade fee payable in respect of certain existing equipment) and assumes components working at optimum speed and capacity. Speed comparison refers to download speed only"

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
So STB users are ripped off
£50 for something others get for nothing.
Its not our fault NTL gave us broadband through the set top box.
Not exactly a free upgrade is it ?
I was told on the phone several times that the upgrade would be free.
I guess they want all the STB users to cancel, what about those STB users who got a FREE modem replacement when they rang asking to have 10 meg, I guess the rest of us are secnd class citizens.
Really ****ed off now, way to go NTL
