Re: 10 meg - Modem, Location & Speed you're getting

As promised, tested this at 2:15am.

NTL Speed site

Fri, 09 Dec 2005 02:15:49 GMT

1st 512K took 735 ms = 696.6 KB/sec, approx 5740 Kbps, 5.61 Mbps
2nd 512K took 609 ms = 840.7 KB/sec, approx 6927 Kbps, 6.76 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1016 ms = 503.9 KB/sec, approx 4152 Kbps, 4.05 Mbps
4th 512K took 593 ms = 863.4 KB/sec, approx 7114 Kbps, 6.95 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5983 Kbps, 5.84 Mbps

Irish Speed site:

7.11m Down
497k Up

Tried also
Mirror.ac.uk : 670k/s

Seems to have decreased as the night has gone on! Even though i would have suspected there would have been less heavy use by others at this time of night.
Will see if new SACM . 250. (hopefully the technician will provide!) will make a difference when i get that done tommorow.

I'm jealous of the "guy who's also in Woking"'s speed. I'd be satasfied with speed around that.

Upstream 486 Kbps (60.8 KB/sec) 524 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Dan Elwoods BB speed test gave me download speeds of
2036k download.mirror.ac.uk
1986k artfiles.org
1843k reverse.net

The speed test here
Fri, 09 Dec 2005 07:00:40 GMT

1st 512K took 1906 ms = 268.6 KB/sec, approx 2213 Kbps, 2.16 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2234 ms = 229.2 KB/sec, approx 1889 Kbps, 1.84 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2282 ms = 224.4 KB/sec, approx 1849 Kbps, 1.81 Mbps
4th 512K took 2234 ms = 229.2 KB/sec, approx 1889 Kbps, 1.84 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1960 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps

And it's been giving me that sort of result since last week when the modem got it's new config (no matter what time I try it).

Overall Average Speed = approx 7397 Kbps, 7.23 Mbps

Irish speed site
Down = 9.82m
Up = 482k

Mirror.ac.uk = 1150kb/s

A huge increase, but a poor performance from NTL site. Strange. But, seems to have sorted out problems.

Just ran the speed test again, this time with Zone Alarm uninstalled (rather than just turned off), as i noticed my test machine was getting 4mb downloads (almost twice what my main one was getting despite being a much much lower spec).

And these are the results
Sat, 10 Dec 2005 10:52:57 GMT

1st 512K took 875 ms = 585.1 KB/sec, approx 4821 Kbps, 4.71 Mbps
2nd 512K took 828 ms = 618.4 KB/sec, approx 5096 Kbps, 4.98 Mbps
3rd 512K took 735 ms = 696.6 KB/sec, approx 5740 Kbps, 5.61 Mbps
4th 512K took 875 ms = 585.1 KB/sec, approx 4821 Kbps, 4.71 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5120 Kbps, 5 Mbps

A big improvement on the sub 2mb i've been getting.

I never realised how much difference Zone alarm could make
