Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
SMC7004ABR UK
This is mine, and would be interested (as per the earlier posts), to see if this will get me the full 10MB service. I have looked at SMC website and for the user that had the model with the 'A' missing, it looked to be a completely different model in the picture (and I am sure it's not, as in total shape and design). I have discarded my original documentation so cannot confirm that just because an 'A' is missing from the model number it is a completely different router. Just hope mine works. (Cambridge)

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
Hi rick, the BR and ABR Barracade models may look different but they contain the same basic core hardware, it's just that the ABR is basically a BR version 2 after tweaking and improving certain functions of the first revision.
If the manufacturer doesn't supply the relevent specifications and a google search on product reviews of the item turns up empty handed then the only option left is to actually test the device yourself.

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
Her is a link for the datasheet for the SMC7004ABR V.2
http://www.smc.com/files/AW%5CDS_7004ABR_V2.pdf
The WAN port is definately 10base-T/100baseTX. and it appears to be working ok here. see below:
Sat, 26 Nov 2005 23:53:10 GMT
1st 512K took 563 ms = 931240 KB/sec, approx 7673 Kbps, 7.49 Mbps
2nd 512K took 469 ms = 1117885 KB/sec, approx 9211 Kbps, 9 Mbps
3rd 512K took 453 ms = 1157369 KB/sec, approx 9537 Kbps, 9.31 Mbps
4th 512K took 437 ms = 1199744 KB/sec, approx 9598 Kbps, 9.37 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 9005 Kbps, 8.79 Mbps

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
Sorry I never put any Model Numbers on Mine, the 7004BR (old and cannot buy any more) def has a 10mbit port which means as the max it can passis 10mbit minus the overheads, you probably get about 8mbit max. The difference in cost for a 10mbit or a 10/100mbit part to Manufacurers is V.Small indeed which is why Most are putting a 10/100 port - you will find with most OLD models that they fitted a 10mbit port as back then 10mbit internet was like unheard of - esp in UK market.

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
I have been losing connection to my cable since 10Mb upgrade.
After an hour on the phone to tech support and much network tweaking this end it appears routers that cant cope with the full 10Mb speeds cause this signal loss problem

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
Hi, Can someone explain in more detail why a 10 mb WAN port on a router can't achieve the full 10 mb from the cable network. To the ignorant (that's me) it sounds like a good match. Thanks.

ok , not an expert, but as I understand it
- 2 factors are at play here, the notional 'speed', which is the maximum that can be sent/received by the router, and the 'duplex' setting.
- 'full duplex' can both send and receive at the same time & should achieve 'near' 10 meg
- half duplex, however, can only send or receive, but not both at the same time, so the device has to wait for the 'ack' packet to be sent/received before sending or receiving the next data packet.
This effectively halves the download speed, as many (older) routers have half duplex wan ports.

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
Thanks,
Well I removed my router (Linksys BEFW11S4 V2 - w/10mb WAN) and went direct PC-Modem to achieve the following :
Wed, 30 Nov 2005 21:28:54 UTC
1st 128K took 94 ms = 1394383 Bytes/sec = approx 11601 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
So I'm 100% convinced that my speed issues are simply the router, not the AMBIt 120 ot NTL network issues.

They aren't quite the same thing. While a 10 meg network port (ethernet) is sending data at 10 Mbps (max) - it is ethernet frames it is sendiing - inside these frames are the TCP/IP packets, inside these packets is the http data - all this overhead means the final actual data transfer is a fair bit less than 10 Mbps.

Re: [Merged] Routers and 10Mb
I see, so you mean the NTL service is actually greater than 10mb if you include the overhead.
