New Cable Modem
Hi folks,
Im currently on NTL 3Mbit service via a Samsung STB.
Today I got an ntl:200 cable modem which I bought off eBay. What im wondering is how I go about using this instead of the STB?
I have been on the phone to about 7 different people at NTL this evening and nobody seems to know.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

Re: New Cable Modem
You don't. ntl will not connect modems that they have not supplied.

That's because you cannot connect a modem off eBay to the system. The only way to move to sacm is to have NTL install a legitimate modem that is on our system and installed by us. You have been sold a modem that is no longer on our system. And is about as much good as a lighthouse in the desert.
EDIT to say Paul beat me to it

Re: New Cable Modem
Thats the one thing they should know that the modems bought on ebay won't work.
In fact the seller is actually breaking the law by putting it up for sale as it remains property of NTL.
If you phone NTL, they will give you a modem that will be registered to work with your address.
to the forums by the way

Whilst that's the case for rented modems, its not the case for all. Personally I own my modem, having been with NTL for years now I signed up back in the day when you got a discount for buying your own modem, I bought it through NTL (but not from them) and it is my property to do with as I please. Whilst I know that it would be no use to anyone that bought it, if I decided to sell it (which I wont because funnily enough I'm using it ) then I could perfectly legally sell it.
However I accept that the majority of the modems on sale on Ebay are ex rental ones that NTL have never bothered to pick back up from ex subscribers so "technically" those remain the property of NTL even though they will never want them back.

While what you say is true, the OP says he bought an NTL:200, which AFAIK is a model that was never for sale through NTL. In this case, he has bought a modem that was up for sale illegally.

Yep, your right mate. The modem i bought was ntl:200. I think this must have been a rented one cos im not aware of anyone having purchased these from NTL.
As it stands I only paid about £10 for this modem and NTL are being very nice about it and coming out on Saturday morning to install a brand new one for free to replace the existing connection thru the STB. So im not really too fussed and will just bin this one as I cant be bothered with the hassle of sending the thing back as im off to Barbados tomorrow
Thanks for all the info though guys, very useful!

Quite right, teach me to read the whole thread properly I was simply responding to Halcyon's generic statement, but of course in this case he was quite right. My apologies.
