ftp servers allowed?
Do ntl allow its customers to host ftp servers? When I scan the correct port when I have a ftp server running, the scan says the port is clossed which means nobody can cannot to my ftp server.

They do allow FTP servers only under the following conditions:
1. It is private (i.e. unadvertised - you invite select users to connect to it), with no anonymous account access (all accounts must have a username/password)
2. You don't facilitate the transmission of material against the AUP - warez, porn, hate material, etc.
3. You don't upload 'too much', negatively impacting the service for others. They have said, not written, that the max anyone should really upload is 300meg a day - but this isn't a cap, only a guidline.
NTL don't port block port 21, if someone can't connect then it is a firewall issue somewhere. Have you turned off the XP firewall? Turn off any 3rd party firewall, like ZoneAlarm? Are you behind a router? If you are then you need to activate "port forwarding" so people can access it, otherwise your router will act as a firewall and deny incoming connections.
If you have done all that, you can actually change the port you connect to (leaving it on default, port 21, isn't a good idea anyway, other people can scan for it, and attack it), but NTL don't block port 21.

..actually they do, maybe not p21 but they do block many ports including 1433
Edit: just checked and they block these ports:
137 (UDP)
138 (UDP)
139 (TCP)
445 (UDP & TCP)
593 (TCP)
1433 (TCP)
1434 (UDP)
27374 (TCP)
This is done at your Cable Modem.

Re: ftp servers allowed?
ive tried with no firewalls running and windows xp firewall off. I dont have a router. Ive tried connecting via localhost and it works fine. try connecting via ip and i get this reply. I know my Ip is correct.
Each time receive the following (ive taken out my ip by the way):
SmartFTP v1.5.990.11
Resolving host name "ip"
Connecting to ip Port: 625
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
Client closed the connection.
Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...
Active Help: http://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/index.php/58
Continue to login attempt 2...
Ive had my mate try it as well, gets the same. The log on details are correct, there isent an anonymous account on the server. When I watch bullet proof ftp server I dont see any connection attempts.
If the logon details were incorrect such as password and username then I would see the login attempt on the server software and receive a message refering to incorrect login details on the ftp client.
Ive tried different server software, created different accounts and changed the port. Still get the same thing, works great via localhost but not via ip.

No idea why it was there or where it was before, so I've put it where I think it belongs

is that the port your FTP server is running on? Normally port 21 if you haven't manually changed it on the server.

Re: ftp servers allowed?
Hi There
As you mentiond you do not use a router,
1: check your IP and make sure its a public IP
(start/run/ type cmd, then type ipconfig/all (hit enter)
Should be a public if no router/svr is used.
2: You mentioned connecting via localhost and it worked.
hit start, run, type cmd and in the dos window type "netstat -a"
this will bring up a list of all the connections and listening deamons with port numbers.
Make sure your ftp server is in the list and is listening on the public IP
3: If your running multiple network cards, make sure you have disabled the firewall on the correct card.
Also make sure you have diabled the firewall on the network card and not the loopback by mistake,
If your PC has a public address,(never post your real IP on public forums.) then I cant see why you cant connect using the IP,
if on the otherhand you were using NAT (network address translation) then thats the problem,
good luck and let us know how you get on
HTH

Re: ftp servers allowed?
I used to run an FTP server for a long time, before it became used so little as it was mirrored by a web server.
Used to run the FTP on 7070 and the web server on 8080 - now the web server's on 8080 and, of course, 80.

Re: ftp servers allowed?
On a side-note, can I just raise a word of caution about NOT having a firewall. Please, get yourself a firewal, even if is a software firewall...in addition to WinXP's inbuilt firewall. This is a must for security reasons.
Ok, back on track... are you running a software firewall already? IF so have you added port 21 to the list of allowed ports. If you're using something good then you can assign allowed WAN IP address, of the people you want to connect to you, for security reasons; but it depends on your FTP requirements...
