Unable to upload a complete website to personal web space
Basic background information:
I run a home network that consists of a Dell desktop PC and a Sony Vaio laptop connected to a Linksys router (the laptop has wireless connection) which is connected to a Pace STB for internet connection. Both PCs run Windows XP Professional.
I live in the Manchester area
I have developed a personal website using MS FrontPage 2000 (deliberately avoiding the MS FP special features - as far as I know - so as to avoid any ISP issues). The site has a total size of 20.4Mb. It correctly displays in IE 6.0 and Netscape 7.2 when viewed locally.
I have no problems with e-mail (I cannot remember when I last had a problem, it was so long ago) and I have no problem with Internet surfing, Newsgroup access etc.
Problem
I am unable to successfully upload the my web site to my personal web space.
I have tried using Terrapin, SmartFTP, VCOMâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s Powerdesk FTP client and IE6.0. The results I get are as follows:
SmartFTP:
Within a few seconds (and I think it managed a couple of files) I get the message :
"451 Transfer aborted. Insufficient memory or file locked"
Powerdesk FTP:
It transfers a few files, then aborts with the following message:
"Upload failed while writing to the server. Your account on the server may be full"
Frontpage ("Publish Site" option):
It purports to be transferring the files at between 2Kb/s and 4Kb/s (!!?) and it loads the first two files (which are 153k and 194k) in 6 minutes (!). It seems to get stuck on the third file (90k) and I gave up after watching it for over 10 minutes, so I killed it.
IE 6.0:
After 4 minutes and apparently transferring a file or two, it ends with the message:
"An error occurred copying a file to the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to put files on the server
Details:
200 Type set to I
227 Entering passive mode ( string of numbersââ‚à ‚¬Ã‚¦)
150 Opening binary mode data connection for Theme.css"
As all FTP clients correctly connect to the server, I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t think I have incorrectly specified any of the access details and in every case, the passive mode flag is checked
What action have I taken?
I have tried to upload the site many times since about a year ago (I think), and have always had the same problem (I have thus tended to give it up as a lost cause, but I have decided this week to try again...). I have twice contacted NTLââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s STB support desk (prior to the India move) and spoke to two different but very helpful technical support guys. Suffice to say that they advised that their tests showed that there was no problem at the NTL-end and it must be something to do with my network set-up.
I have unhooked the desktop PC from the router and connected it directly to the STB and re-booted everything. I have confirmed that full Internet access is available (e-mail, newsgroups, etc). I have then attempted to upload the site with the direct connection but the same problem occurs, so I think I have eliminated the network as an issue.
Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢m running out of options, but my few remaining thoughts are:
1. It could be that there are timeout issues or "the like"ââ‚ƚ¬Ã‚¦. any thoughts how I can resolve anything in this area?
2. It could be a site problem (i.e. NTL issue), but I have twice called and have been advised that there is no apparent issue (and I don't have any confidence in talking to an Indian voice on this issue - no racial issue, it's just that experience tells me that even though we are speaking the same language, we just don't communicated effectively with each other). As I have been unable to upload the site to NTL, Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢m not confident that I would be any more successful using another web host, which would obviously cost. Any thoughts?
3. It could be a problem with the website I have built using MS FP, but I have doubts about this as it should uploads the files regardless of how the site was built or operates.
You guys are my final hopeâ₠¬Ã‚¦..
Thanks for any helpâ₠¬Ã‚¦.
Martin

Re: Unable to upload a complete website to personal web space
You only get 35meg or something with NTL so your probably running out of space on the server your trying to upload too.

Hi to Cable Forum
Have you tried loading the individual files/folders for the site, rather than as the whole site?
Also I am not sure if NTL webspace is compatible with css - anyone?

Re: Unable to upload a complete website to personal web space
The webspace available is 55meg.
First things first- Is there anything on the site at the moment? If there is you should either see an index or your index page when you go to http://homepage.ntlworld.com/yourusername/ if there is nothing there, you should just get an index page showing no files.
If all is ok there, it may be a problem with your upstream connection- can you send emails with attachments properly? Try sending a few 100-500k attachments (even if only to yourself) to check that everything is working fine there. You can also do an upload bandwidth test at www.pcpitstop.com - worth running this and checking that you are getting the correct speed. 300k should be 128k, 1meg = 100k upsteam.
If you want to eliminate issues with the individual webspace, send me a PM and i'll give you a login to a test webspace which i know is working properly so you can try uploading it there (also on ntlworld).

I don't see why it shouldn't be.... however i've never tried it myself. Even if it was, it shouldn't cause the problems that the OP is seeing- the webspace would upload properly but just display right once it got there.

Re: Unable to upload a complete website to personal web space
Chris,
Thanks for that...
There is an index page with some of the files there - ( http://homepage.ntlworld.com/martin.ibbotson/)
I regularly send e-mails between work and home in both directions with attachments sometimes in excess of 1Mb without any problems (I'm not able to specifically prove this afternoon as I am ay work and not at home).
I'll try the band width test this pm...
Thanks,
Martin

Re: Unable to upload a complete website to personal web space
all the files that are there, are they supposed to be part of your site?
I would just use Fireftp free, and upload the the html files first, then the jpegs,

Re: Unable to upload a complete website to personal web space
Well, all those _vti_cnf/ folders that frontpage uses (never figured out what they're for as I've never used frontpage) seems to be doubling the space you're using.
