Green box heats up: my service dies...

...will the re-pull that I had to practically beg for do any good?

I have TV through STB and BB through SACM.

I know it sounds crazy, but whenever it's hot outside, my TV and BB stutter for 10 minutes or so and die at exactly the same time. Once the temperatures drop, my service slowly stuttes back into life.

I've been through hell and several engineer visits before someone finally accepted that my story must be true. I must have spent 2 hours over the last month holding for CS.

They finally relented and a new wire is being laid from the box to my flat.

Any opinions as what I can do if that doesn't work?

Cheers.

Ask the engineer to check the cab to see if it has any problems causing the overheat to knock out people's services? Does it happen to any other people in the area or just you? If it's just you I'd ask to be moved within the cab.

Re: Green box heats up: my service dies...

It's quite simple... heat stresses components. You need to make sure your room doesn't get too hot.

Although if I were you, I'd get the SACM and STB replaced as they're clearly faulty to crash at THOSE temperatures, unless you live in the Atacama

Re: Green box heats up: my service dies...

I used to have this problem with my Pace 1000 STB. When summer arrived I noticed the return power level would gradually creep up into the low to mid 60s. This never affected the TV but sometimes I would lose broadband as the middle light would start flashing on the box. Luckily it would come back on towards the evening as it cooled off. I originally thought that it was a problem with the green box getting too hot, but since I've had a Samsung box installed my return power has stayed in the mid to low 40s regardless of the outside temperature.

Re: Green box heats up: my service dies...

This problem is due to the power levels from the amplifier in the cabinet.

Report it to faults when you have no return path.
The Tech who calls will check the return path power level at the STB and at the Cab.

The optimum power level at the STB should be 52 Dbmv

what a load of rubbish . If both boxes fail at the same time its not likely to be the boxes, its the connection to something further upstream. I think if the heat was causing the boxes to fail then McGraw would have failed first, yes electronics are sensitive to heat but humans are more sensitive

Re: Green box heats up: my service dies...

The problem is more likely a bad connection causeing signal ingress/egress(interfearance) onto your line which will also give you bad signal levels. If the STB is very hot to the touch,it's often because the STB is having to work harder & therefore the modem overheats as well.A repull should clear it & i cant see a overheating Magnavox amp causeing the problems tho,if it was, the'd be more affected.

Re: Green box heats up: my service dies...

Most of the amps in Manchester are Jerrold not Magnovox.

No worries Spike. I'm a tech in manchester and this fault is quite common

Definitely. We had similar problems earlier this year. Just after the tech had replaced the STB, another tech turned up to see a neighbour - he'd been working on a faulty amp in the cab at the end of the road for a few days. The changed STB made no difference (service failed again before he'd started the van to leave), the replacement amp was what was needed.

The repull didn't work.

I will ask them to move me in the cabinet.
