The 10th World
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4730061.stm
Quote:
Astronomers in the United States have announced the discovery of the 10th planet to orbit our Sun.
The largest object found in our Solar System since Neptune was discovered in 1846, it was first seen in 2003 but has only now been confirmed as a planet.
|
This is the tenth planet found and confirmed Only 8 planets have been discovered in the history of the world (obviously that doesnt include discovering the planet earth which some people still seem to have trouble with ).
Why is this not a bigger news item? I think it is a historical scientific moment.

Why haven't they got the picture I saw on BBC 24 this morning? They had the planet ringed so we could check it out.I also remember something about it taking 500 years to orbit the sun...Mind I may have misheard.

The name Sedna has been provided by its discoverers.
However, if its planetary status is confirmed, it may be that astronomy's governing body, the International Astronomical Union, will want to reconsider this, to make it more consistent with the mythological names of other planets.

Re: The 10th World
I hope Sedna is a real planet of some kind and is given such a title, it may be something we need to happen to give moral to people to boost exploration of space.

They should call it The wondrous 10th planet of unimaginable doom and evil. That would get headlines, trust me

A bit long for the entry in the encyclopedia though...and it just doesn't have that ring to it.How about Deathstar?
Though the way I hear it another fancied name is Xena.I was also wondering which major greek gods names were left, that haven't been used in the solar system so far.A female one for a change..Hera,Athena,Demeter,Persephone?
Andromeda has been used I believe elsewhere in the cosmos.
