Quit NTL?
I've had NTL TV since 1997 and for the first time I'm tempted to switch to Sky. In all those years I've only had the engineer out once to replace my box, so not bad for 8 years!
But the lure of Sky+ for £89 and a proper red button are too tempting for £89 fitted.
Is there anything good to keep me with NTL? Is a sky+ type thing anywhere near? Will NTL ever overtake Sky for whats on offer with digital TV?
I already have a BT phone line so Sky will be cheaper than what I pay NTL.
Anyone give me some future NTL news to save me getting a dish?

Re: Quit NTL?
A Sky+ type box (PVR STB) is in the works, & VoD is being rolled out, gradually.
Why do you have a BT line?

Re: Quit NTL?
My NTL phone line kept going wrong, dead. NTL blamed the 5 breakdowns in one month on the internal wiring of the house. BT came out used the same wiring, four years no faults.
So Sky with all channels £41, soon to be £42.5, but NTL would cost me £50 something I think.
But which is better Sky or NTL for....
Picture
Sound
Reliability
As I 've read on here it it ain't broke (which my NTL TV isn't) why change? Which is what is stopping me fully jumping onto Sky fearing that once NTL switched off and I'm on Sky the thing won't be as good or I'll get a faulty box!

Re: Quit NTL?
I took the plunge last week and got Sky+ installed, I;ve still kept my NTL phone and broadband (never had any problems with those and changing to BT and a new ISP would be too much hassle).
Interactive Services are far superior with more options, The programme guide is far faster, doesnt hang the STB, more channels available and the ability to record 2 channnels simultaneously + watch a program previouly recorded.
Sky also broadcasts dolby digital on some channels & the stb has an optical output to carry the digital sound to a surrounbd sound system.
All in all it was a good move.
As i got a month free with sky & NTL require 30 days notice of cancellation of the tv service, you don't really run any risks of having no digital tv service, added to that Sky's customer service is far superior to NTL.

Not according to all the NTL CS Reps I've spoken to.
"We have no plans to release a PVR at present".
If NTL are planning a PVR why don't they say so?

Because with NTL the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

More likely that the right hand doesn't know of any plans to release a left hand!

Hmm. I'm sure I read something a while back about ntl planning one.... can't find where I read it though!
In any case, Telewest are definitely planning a PVR box for this year, with a 160GB HDD & three tuners. If TW are doing one, ntl surely will too. Plus, of course, they're expected to merge anyway some point this year...

Re: Quit NTL?
Will an NTL or Telewst PVR require more cabling to you home or will it plug straigh in where the old box was?

and you've hit the nail on the head there, ntl cs reps aren't privvy to every trial/new idea that ntl have on the go at any one time. ntl may be trialling pvr at the moment, i have no idea, but until ntl have trialled and identified whether they want to go ahead with it then i can't see the point of them saying it's a potential.
as experience has proved in the past if customers get a sniff of something possibly being introduced then they ring up trying to get details, of which cs reps don't have any, and then get arsey when they don't get answers.
