iirc its not the water that kills it, its the minerals/chemicals. soak a phone in deionised water, dry it out and it will suffer no ill effects*

*theoretically. i'm not suggesting anyone tries it on their new £300 phone!
Correct- pure water is actually an insulator - with a pretty rigid structure - it's the charged ions that move around in solution in the impure water that conduct.

But surely even if you soak in deionised water, you will still get residual minerals inside it...

It seems the recommended cycle for drowned electronics is:

0. Remove power and power sources
1. Tap water rinse (preceded by detergent cleaning, perhaps, if the soaking was in dirty water)
2. Flush with distilled water to reduce tap water residue
3. Alcohol (if available in sufficient quantity and purity).

Re: Washed phone.

I'll second Matth's point #3, you need plenty of alcohol Incognitas, taken internally, forget cleaning the phone with it

Re: Washed phone.

For a living, I make, and sometimes install, boxes of electronics like the one below. Unfortunately, they have a habit of filling with water when in use; either because someone forgot to tighten a cable gland or because the air in the box is expanding and it's breathing down a cable. After a while of sloshing about they stop working and are send back to me. After I've opened them up, it will usually take 2~3 days in a very warm airing cupboard to get them going again. If you have a phone that is almost completely enclosed then I wouldn't be suprised if this took a week or two. If you can pull the back off then this should speed things up. But don't expect the phone to be very reliable again. When I take these boxes apart there's often a furry growth all over the place that takes a good deal of scrubbing with a toothbrush and IPA (Iso-propyl Alcohol, not India Pale Ale ) to get rid. Yep, ordinary tap water is full of stuff that will leave while splodges over any electronics but I'm not sure that dunking a whole phone in alcohol is ideal - it'll probably get into the LCD too.

My suggestion would be to keep drying it out but start thinking about a new phone too.

Re: Washed phone.

Am I eck, but if alcohol is going to be suggested, don't waste it on a phone is all I'm saying, especially in this heat

Blooming eck Altis, what are those big blue & white parts on that board?
They look a bit big to be ordinary poly caps.

Wouldn't by chance be on a JCB?

Re: Washed phone.

IPA is highly toxic and will make you blind so drinking it is not recomended

As Atlis says... A good clean down with IPA will help remove any minerals and dirt from the pcb...

NB.. Sometimes IPA can discolour plastics so be carefull with the casing !

Re: Washed phone.

Well as he rushed out of the house because he was late for the bus to college I don't know the state of the phone..

I'll have to wait until tonight and wait until he is in a 'better' mood than he was this morning..If he wasn't nearly 17 I would smack him on the back of his legs like when he was smaller..

Mind if he was that small again I'd just hug him. I miss my little boy a lot these days.

Those big blue and white blocks are Grayhill opto-isolated I/O modules. The blue ones convert 4-20mA into a TTL signal with a freq of 14.4 to 72kHz. The white ones are digital inputs.

AFAIK, JCB don't make anything this big. But you're in the right area - it's on a piling rig. Here's me on a repair job in Ireland. As it happens, I was chasing a fault that was created by water (although most of it was, by now, ice) which had caused corrosion in a connector that was 'conveniently' placed (not by me) in the middle of the mast.

No I won't.Mothers lose their sons and hopefully, if they are lucky gain a super daughter-in-law....A son becomes a husband and things being the way they are, no longer need their mother(which is how it should be).

We do however get to be our daughter's best friend.

What is that old saying

A son is a son untill he takes a wife
But a daughter is a daughter for the rest of your life
