New Install (need a little help)

Hi there had TV and Phone line installed

All works fine
Very friendly and knowledgable installer

The guy did tell me my tel number, but i kinda didnt write it down, so I have few questions if I may,

How can i discover my number as i have enabled call barring and cant ring my mobile to see.

I looked on web about call barring and dialed 151 which i saw mentioned here
http://www.ntlworld.com/help/security/dialers/index.php

That seems to have worked fine and bars mobiles and expensive calls but still allows local calls, are these free?
On my contract Level 4 Barring has been ticked so is that what I have?

I would like no outgoing calls except emergency.

How do i disable call barring which i enabled by dialling 151?

I havent been given a pin number or anything, do I have to call CS to get this?

One more question.
Do i need any pin codes etc for my digital TV? to access any additional services as I havent been given these after the install.

Please Help

Dial 174, it should give you an automatic message saying "You are connected to..."

Did you not receive any documentation about your new services at all from NTL? If not then calling CS may not help if you do not have your account numbers etc. Normally after an install the PIN number for the additional services on the digital tv is set to a default number. Can't recall what it is but the installer normally mentions it before leaving.

Re: New Install (need a little help)

Pin numbers are usually either 1111 or 1234 for the tv service.

Could try dialling 174 or 175, put the phone down and it will ring you back with your number (however this option depends on which area you're in)

tbh really you have a few different questions which really could only be answered by someone looking at which call plan you're on etc, give the lovely Customer Services people a ring and they should be able to help

Im gonna ring NTL Customer Services on Monday regarding the barring, the 151 works and has enabled barring on premium and mobile numbers, but i shall be asking them how i use it? ie disable it, enable barring for everything except emergency calls.

Interactive seems to be very flaky, sometimes works sometime i get the following message " We are currrently unable to proceed with your request, please try again later" MO44 (error message)

Anyone in hemel/Luton Area if so does the interactive ever work? or is it a configuration problem?

One last question guys/gals is there a sequence of button presses to check software and see if there is a update available like with SKY boxes?

many thanks for all your help

Oops another if i may, i have a CM already (3meg) the guy simply put a splitter in and has shared the same cable for tv and modem will this affect things or is signal more than strong enough to be split? its a silver splitter. with some decibel info on it.

Re: New Install (need a little help)

Press page up/down/blue.That will take you into the on screen panel(not the engineers only panel tho) Go to page 3 & look at 'conn status'It should say '5 conn' (or connected)
Anything else & the VOD/Interactive wont work .
As for the software update,I dont think so as it's going to be changing more frequently than Sky as we put more stuff on.And splitting the feed for a CM is commen practice & in the SOP.As long as he checked the levels thing should be ok.TIP' If you are having problems with the CM,do the up/down blue & look for 5 conn. That will tell you if the return path is working.Anything else than 5 conn,no return path!Get a tech out!!

Re: New Install (need a little help)

If you click on this link http://www.ntl.com/home/telephone/tariff.asp and enter your post code it will give you information on how to use call barring In some areas however the call barring level is added to the line and cannot be changed by the customer

Modem has a seperate IP address as well.If all was working ok before & not now,it might be a outage at the Mux,DA.Leave the stb on screen 3 for a minute or two & see if it changes,if not.Ring faults.

Re: New Install (need a little help)

Well folks ive been trying a few different things and have found what i think the problem is.

As I already had a CM connected the engineer simply connected a splitter box to the cable already installed.

I personally think these splitters make things worse what with weakening the signal etc.

Any way when this splitter box is inline and connecting to my CM and STB (for TV) thats when i get problems with the "return power unknown" message.

So i thought i would unplug this splitter box as i hate them and think they degrade the signal and performance and low and behold the problem kinda fixes itself.

I get a 49% reading on power, which is low isnt it still? but the interactive kind of works......if i press the red button on BBC it works fine........is the interactive button on remote exactly the same as the red button?

I thimk the power needs tweaking, or i need some kinda of amplifier in line.

Rick
