CAN WE GET BACK ON TOPIC PLEASE. I will remove any further posts about animals using street cabs as toilets, or NTL techs using animals as punchbags.

For discussion about cabs that have been left open, please post away. Otherwise, please go away.

Re: Green box doors left open

I think what really annoys a lot of people is that for the majority of the open boxes, an NTL van will most likely drive straight past it, the driver seeing that it is obviously open & the driver will not stop & close/lock it.

Now I'd stop & close them, esp if I had a key and I'm not an NTL employee. It seems that these days people won't do anything unless they are told to.

Perhaps the NTL driver is doing that because it isn't a NTL box but belongs to BT.

Fair point. I posted before saw this, I was that angry at Ben.
I urge you to leave my last post though as it addresses workers rights to a safe environment and shows the distress caused to those that just don't care what their animals get up to..
It will be my last comment on it.

And as you asked so nicely, I'll leave your last comment alone as a reasonable response to what others have said.

If anybody wants to discuss animals and hygeine any further, please use PM.

Re: Green box doors left open

I was a contractor for NTL, in a NTL badged van. I could probably say 80% of cabinets were unlocked or broken. As a contractor we are paid per job, no financial incentive to report boxes damaged were offered and on the odd occasion I did, it would take sometimes up to an hour to report (unpaid). The simple truth is as there are no auditing of contractors and the very poor treatment they receive by NTL and the firm that they contract for, the contractor will never behave like a valued employee. i had high hopes when starting of maintaining my excellent customer service skills but eventually I couldn't cope with the way customers were treated and walked.
Getting back to cabinets, BT would send engineers out on call to shut cabinets, guard and secure damaged ones that would need replacing. They have an online internal website that engineers report damged equipment thru, stating the priority of the job etc. The way BT deal with it compared to NTL bears very little resemblence.

<off topic stuff removed - Chris T>

Anyway, a valid post without reference to animals etc - I remember reading an april fools joke thread a while back (in April believe it or not!) which said about people adopting NTL boxes... I think if NTL went out and fixed the boxes in that the doors stayed on the hinges and then got certain people who live nearby to monitor them with a key or something (of course for a small discount off their services ) might help keep an eye on these things.

Perhaps... maybe not the most ideal of things though.

Many estates have some sort of neighbourhood watch scheme (as far as I'm aware) and this could be something to go along the same route and ntl could offer them some sort of incentive for them to do so (would probably be a lot cheaper than continually fixing broken boxes - they're not doing so at the moment, but going forward, if they keep getting damaged, its just postponing the inevitable in that they're all gonna have to be fixed sooner or later.

Giving the keys to Cabs out to members of the public could lead to more problems than it solves. What if a key gets dropped and someone picks it up, opens a cab and wrecks it or has a play with the cables.
A better idea is a responsive, properly run and easily accessible open/ damaged cab report function. Maybe they should put a phone number on the outside of the cabs so people can ring in if they are left open? Coupled with a web based reporting function the number of open and damaged boxes could be reduced drastically.

Re: Green box doors left open

Some cabs in the dodgy parts of Luton are just wires sticking out the ground! they are the lift off type, the lid is missing and the shells is as well. the tags are all labeled, anyone can disconnect or reconnect or just cut. 9 months after reporting its still the same. the locals don't care, they have mostly gone over to Sky!

The latter would create a more costly solution but I totally agree it would be the better way forward. They could then look to see which areas have the most problems and perhaps make stronger boxes to go in those areas to try and counter the damage being done.

With the first point, perhaps not giving the keys to the public, but perhaps giving them some way of securing the cabinet like a strap that can at least hold the doors shut to stop them swinging around for them to be broken off.
