I'm thinking about buying a Dell. Are there any issues that make these computers worse than from elsewhere?

They only sell intel based systems

I can't enthuse enough about amd64 bit machines

mate of mine waiting on one to arrive since 28th april! some parts are on back order. he's fuming not surprisingly.

Sister ordered one a while back while it was on offer (standard type of spec) and it arrived within a week. Has yet to go wrong without Operator Error playing a part

I've got a Dell Laptop and it's been rock solid so far no matter what I tinker with

They do very good comps but you can get cheaper ones and also they are not that easy to upgrade at a later date

Gotta Dell laptop here too. Very reliable. I guess like every big company, customer service fails at times. If it's not here by friday he's cancelling.

Was it a standard spec or was it a design your own pc model? Not that it makes any difference, that sort of dely is not good when you think how big a company it is.
As to ease of upgrade all PCs upgradability will depend on the person doing the upgrade and the size of case. If it's a standard tower case there is no real reason why they should be hard to upgrade. Small cases are a PITA to be honest though lol

I've got 1 thats been rock solid for about 3 years now. It's coped with everything I've thrown at it without complaint.

It was a design your own one. Pretty much standard spec apart from wireless keyboard and mouse.

Sounds like Dell are once again suffering from the success of their advertising and offers. It's a shame though as I have yet to have a problem with this laptop or my sisters' desktop that was anything to do with hardware

I've used about 6 different models of Dell laptop so far. Each one has been flaky; poor design, poor construction, recalls over potentially explosive power adaptors etc etc etc.

Newer models haven't been as bad as the ones they were flogging say 3 years ago but I'd still be dubious about going near them for a laptop.

Desktops seem to be much better though and aren't too pricey right now.

Our company standardised on Dell stuff a couple of years ago, rock solid and no crashes here so when it came to upgrading my home PC I went down the Dell route.

I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

Quite the opposite in my opinion. They are solid machines, excellent components, well designed and built and generally problem free.

I'm on my fourth Dell desktop, though upgrades over the years, and they're better now than ever (and I was always very happy with them). In fact my old 700mHz P3 is running Win Xp Pro as a server now, 24/7 and it's 5 years old.

I'd disagree with the upgrade bit on current models. On my current desktop I've doubled the RAM (always buy your own, never from Dell, it's overpriced) added an additional hard drive and replaced the DVD-ROM with a DVD-RW drive. Most people don't want to upgrade motherboards, it's generally more economical to upgrade the whole PC anyway!
