What about deleting the handlers from the registry and making XP rebuild the list?

Have you tried running Tweakui to make sure the handlers are switched on for the drives in question and to see what is set to handle them?

Re: "What action do you want to take" problem

set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdrom\AutoRun to 0

this should disable auto insert notification for the whole system...

EDIT: guh? does everyone else see a gap in 'Services' above? cos there sure ain't a space there!

I see a space and it's not there in the line when you quote it prior to posting

it looks to me as if the handlers are working. Except the "choose an action" dialogue isnt appearing. If i plug the memory card in it opens the drive, if i put a CD in nothing happens at all

yes, even if the handlers are on why doesnt the dialog appear?

ive also noticed that when i download something. The Open / Open folder dialog no longer appears

i've rebuilt the handlers by setting them to pick a specific application applying it and then changing it back to "ask me" and applying that.

this seems to have worked

Ive noticed now that if the memory card has a picture on it then it pops up the "Chose and action" dialog, if there is no picture there then it doesnt do anything

If the CD is blank or has only photos on it then the "chose and action" dialog appears but if the CD has mixed files on it then nothing happens

the common point is that all the types that arent working dont have a list of applications to choose from so therefore will not pop up a list,. Surely open folders to view files should be an option for every type of media except for blank???

At least rebuilding the handlers has worked, I've just had to reload XP on a pc here because networking has screwed up and won't reset

i had a problem like that and i had to change the home network name to something random and then change it back. Once i had gone through that process it all worked fine
