Re: Memory tools

to be honest how fast can you expect a 500 celeron to go,you need the virus scan, you need the firewall ,chuck some ram at it as a few friends see if they have any or know someone who might have some old ram to try

Re: Memory tools

Pretty much what I suspected- been on my mind to upgrade. Well, I did a few bits and bobs along the way over the years. Think it originally had 68Mb RAM- The rest I salvaged from the scrapheap (literally). Will check everest and see if worth updating the CPU or the whole dam lot.

Cheers guys

Always good to get second opinions

Re: Memory tools

what you really need to do is deside exactlly what you want it to do,if it does that, then stick with it ,otherwise its a few hundred quid spent on something you do not really need.If on the other hand it does not then a new build would be the way to go if affordable, its all down to choice. If you browse the net and word process then your fine.If you want to decode video or create dvds or want to play games then .......

Re: Memory tools

Well I ran (although deathmarched would be a more accurate description) Everest last night. Very useful bit of software! 2.5Hrs later(yes it was that slow!), after my computer finally managed to load and print a report for me, got lots of useful info. I just need some help with the translation though. Not sure what to look at, but here's a few stats for ya:

Physical Memory:

Total 223 MB

Used 169 MB

Free 53 MB

Utilization 76 %

Swap Space:

Total 1669 MB

Used 92 MB

Free 1576 MB

Utilization 6 %

Virtual Memory:

Total 1892 MB

Used 262 MB

Free 1630 MB

Utilization 14 %

Benchmark test:
Mem latency 211.8 ns
Mem write 112 Mb/s
Mem read 406 Mb/s

Clutching at straws, but updating my BIOS wouldn't help I guess (currently 1998, V4.51PG Pheonix tech). Just thinking in terms of boot speed really.
Basically I mainly need comp for internet, word processing and some graphics software.
As I say this is all a learning curve to me at the moment. Any pearls of wisdom (not the Norman kind).

Re: Memory tools

The test - not really needed, the identification stuff like SPD, memory slots etc. is done by the time the display is up.

Re: Memory tools

SPD?
My main gripe is even when not connected to internet, and anti-virus, anti-spyware disabled, my computer is still extremely, pathetically, fingertapping, wall starringly sloooooooooow.
Before I had broadband fitted things ran nice and smooth. I could understand it if I had stuff running in the background, but it's slow even without that stuff now. All scans are clean- I've done so many scans of every kind I can think over the last wk1/2, I've lost track. The only way I could defrag (my initial suspition was a messy use of harddrive space, after dwnloading latest versions/ updates for explorer, win98, MSmessenger, RealPlayer etc.) was in Safe mode and still is. So something is working in the bckgrnd but I don't know what. I've tried chucking more RAM it at, but my motherboard doesn't seem to shift past 256MB- it did accept 384 but only the once, then wouldn't boot up. Just told me there was a fault with device 3 section B (??) and to run windows setup.

Basically
1. why isn't it running like it used to when not using internet?
2. What the smeg do I have to do to get it back the way it was?

I know I have an old spec machine, but if it was ok before, whats caused it to slow down.

Sorry guys, rant over- It's just am trying to write up a PhD (and yes backed up a few versions BEFORE broadband was installed). Am so close to finishing and now I cant even open Microsoft word!

Take it off the net,Uninstall firewall ,anti virus and spyware and it may well be back as it was, firewalls and a/v run in the background, some a/v runs a constant slow running scan in the background,do you have one of those??
If you want it to do some singing and dancing and your not happy with it doing the waltz im afraid the only option is upgrade

Re: Memory tools

I know what your saying. I've tried disabling them all via msconfig.exe so they dont even startup from boot, so wouldn't that just leave those progs sitting idle on my harddrive without using up RAM?

Re: Memory tools

Some programs start up without sitting there
Try looking in processes see if anything from a/v runs there, just cuz there isn't an icon in the tray does not mean its not running

Re: Memory tools

aye captain but we have a warp core breach and had to jetison the core
We need a new core captain and while your at it we could do with a new curcuit, and while your at it captain if we give it some fresh lithium crystals it may keep up

core = processor
curcuit= motherboard
lithium crystals=ram

Re: Memory tools

Scotty pulls it out of the bag. Auto-destruct stopped at Tmius 2 seconds.

Looks like I was just being impatient. I currently have EIGHT open windows (that includes MSword, MSmessenger, Iexplorer, all whilst listening to some MP3 files- Rage against the machine naturally!) and all seems well. Try explaining that one.
Alls I can say is YAY!!
Must just be a case of sitting out the storm for about 20mins after the damn thing first boots up. Weird thing is I seem to now only have 128Mb RAM! Go figure!! Will take RAM sticks out and re-seat again....... or is that just tempting fate?
