Ghost Image across a LAN

I have 3 PC's and a lappie (all on W98SE) connected via Linksys BEFSR41 router.

I am trying to backup all these PCs (& lappie) to my main PC using Norton Ghost across my LAN. This PC is the only one with a slave second HDD.

Working on my client PC (the receiving main m/c) I've created the Norton Ghost 'peer to peer' floppy boot discs containing my NIC DOS drivers but when I run them it boots OK but reports I have two NICs in my PCI slot and fails to bind !! Looking in Networks and Device Manager it reports my Compaq 3120 NIC OK, but 'winipcfg' shows my ethernet adapter as an Intel 82577 (because the Compaq 3120 & Intel 82577 are one and the same and share drivers).

Although this explains the anomoly it still doesn't solve the problem of Ghost reporting two NICs though.

Any clever techs here know how to get Ghost to see just the one NIC ? and know if my router will work in a DOS environment ? Or failing that any other way to backup across a LAN ?

Could you not just create a local copy of the PC you are ghosting, then just copy it over the LAN to your slave HDD?

You could back up to rewrittable cd's/dvd's
Just a simple solution to a problem I otherwise have no idea about

problem here is a slave partition/hdd is needed

Unfortunately Neil Ghost won't image to the same partition the OS is on and all, but my main PC, have only one HD and one partition. Only solution would be CD-RW on the local m/c but again only my main PC has that facility.

I could I suppose just copy C:\(Local) over the LAN to the client PC slave HD, but how long would that take ?? and could I use it to re establish a system on a new HD (assuming a HD failure)

Problem is none but my main PC have CD writers and Ghosting my main PC spanned 11 CDs (hence installing a slave HD).

Are you using the newest ghost? this I believe allows for back ups from windows,all older versions backed up in dos,

Maybe in windows the lan will show up and maybe just let you do it

Ghost 2003 unfortunately, which uses DOS exclusively.

The secret here is why Ghost seems to think I have two NICs installed and won't 'bind'

I also suspect I might be trying to using the wrong format - - - Ghost boot disks can be "peer to peer" (which I am trying to use) or "mapped network drive", which I'll investigate more. I suspect whichever I use I'll still hit the dual NICs problem though.

I use ghost 2003 best buy i ever made saved so much time

You do have a mapped network drive?,have you looked at the flash tutorials,

Are you running the back up wizard in windows or trying to back up in dos?

Says you need a drive mapping boot disc not a peer to peer?

OK seen why you done peer to peer ,theres a lot of ways of modifing the disc isn't there

Not Sure if this will help in any Shape or Form but When I last Used ghost, I had on a main machine a Ghost Cast Server running and built a Boot Floppy for the NIC that I had in my machines. I set Ghost cast to recieve Images to a certain Dir and the file name (had to keep changing this per Machine I was Ghosting) and booted, ghosted etc no problems.

On the Peer to Peer Side I had to alter the Boot floppy Myself to connect to a Shared Drive Letter, this giving me a extra Drive to choose from as you would - it is the same as DOS Mapping to a drive, which I cannot recall Off Hand.

I have now moved onto Acronis True Image as this works while Windows is running, which means I can choose a Mapped Drive Letter rather than Mess about with DOS - which is messy to say the least. I had my Doubts to how this would work as windows is running yet it makes a Full Image somehow and the Compressions is Very good, a Fully Loaded Machines (XP Pro, Office etc) compressed down to 6 Gig, with a bit more tweaking of What is on my Machine I am sure I could somehow make that Fit onto a DVD Size. It does allow Rescue Disk to be made in the event of a Total machine failure as well.

I've totally thrown in the towel on this one tried to configure the lappie (the NIC was on Nortons list anyway) and still get error 33 'unable to bind'

Tried setting up 'mapped drive' but it asks for DOS LAN Client files tried to Google for those and got fed up (although I did find something - it was beyond me)

Think I'll just backup vital files and forget it

you could caddy up your pcs and move one hdd between them for the purpose of back up,it could then be put away safe away from pcs just in case,just an idea
