Kids pc .....................again :(

Ok, I decided to open a whole thread on the kids determination to wreck their pc and give me a headache, this could be an ongoing topic

I was called over to their house to " have a look at the pc "
On start up we get an error message saying windows\system32\config\ missing or corrupt, insert set-up disk and press 'r' to try and repair fault.

I have tried this to now avail, tried starting in safe mode, also via the F8 route I've tried restoring to the last known good configuration, tried changing boot sequence to try and boot from cd, still won't have it

I will be bring the pc over to my place later so as I can work on any suggestions straight away as the pc is needed for homework ( must be no library's left )

Anywho, thanks in advance for any and all help

Re: Kids pc .....................again :(

There should be more to the error message either "\config\system" or "\config\software". These are the registry hives that are corrupted.

I had one recently where the software hive was corrupted. I copied the hive from the "repair" folder. This got the PC back up and running but because the backup copies where taken the first time XP started I had to reinstall all applications again.

Re: Kids pc .....................again :(

If it was the "system" file, then it holds the information based on you Hardware configuration. This will need to be restored from the original file that was created when the system was installed.

You will probably be ok with the software that has been installed, but will need to reinstall NAV if you have it.

I would recommend reinstalling SP2 as well after you get the system running again.

This is the Microsfot Information on the subject

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307545

I would not do ALL that they tell you, as you will have to reinstall ALL your software. So do this one first and see if it recovers.

Boot from XP CD selecting the r option. Once in the recovery console, cd to windows directory.

Quote:
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
Now reboot..

If more than the system registry file has become corrupt, then a new message should appear, however experience has shown me that this should recover the system.

Once you have it back .... reinstall SP2.

I had problems with these two also.

Windows Installer

Windows Script 5.6

Good Luck

Re: Kids pc .....................again :(

Or, if that PC is running XP, then u could let the system do the work for you:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304449

This actually works perfectly, is dead easy (if u can read a calender ;-) -IF u can get to the command prompt.

Hi matey, late onelast night, just got up, yep, changed the boot sequence and still no joy, would me rigging up the duff hd to my machine enable me to format it ?? would the missing file stop me in any way re-installing the OS onto it ??

Gonna have a cuppa, see if you reply and if not go for it anyways.

Re: Kids pc .....................again :(

Yeah, you can do that ... don't understand why it won't recognise the CD ... weird.

As long as you don't want anything off of the HDD, then by all means reformat/reinstall
